The very first car my father owned was a late 1950s VW bug. Very much like this beautifully preserved vehicle spotted in Calgary, Alberta.
This style of Volkswagen was designed by Ferdinand Porsche's team in the 1930s, with the full support of Hitler's government. The idea was to develop an economical automobile that everyone could afford.
Between 1938 and 2003 over 21 million VW bugs were produced, making them the longest-running, most-produced vehicle in history. In 1958, Volkswagen produced 451,526 units, about 70,000 more than the prior year.
