St. Peter's Catholic Church and Cemetery, Nova Scotia

Where Gumbo Was (#283)

Gumbo was visiting St. Peter's Catholic Church and cemetery in Ingonish, Nova Scotia on the world famous Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Island. Congratulations goes to George G for finding him!

The current church, which was completed in 1913, replaces a wooden one that was destroyed in a fire. Everyone from the Ingonish church community contributed, in their own way, to build this church. While the cement had to be brought in, all the gravel, all the wood were local and the community members put in the labor as well.

Locals, tourists taking the Cabot trail and golfers attending nearby Cape Breton Highlands Links Golf Course stop by the church and cemetery for contemplation, rememberance and prayer. The veterans memorial located in the cemetery is a testament of the community's appreciation for their contribution and sacrifice.
