Starting in October, commuters to one of the islands in Stockholm's archipelago will have a time-saving option using an all-electric hydrofoil 'flying ferry' that can cut the road travel time by half.
The boat, currently in test runs around the city's waters, uses vertical wings or hydrofoils to 'fly' about a meter above the water, and is claimed to use up to 80% less energy than a regular boat of its size. The boat can carry 30 passengers at a top speed of around 55 km/h.
Once testing and approvals are done, the ferry will serve a route between the city center and the island of Ekero. Eventually, if the service is successful, more boats may be ordered. The boat was built by Candela, which makes smaller hydrofoils for the leisure market.
