Frontier Airlines, one of the U.S. ultra-low-cost carriers known for making much of its money through add-on fees, is actually reducing the charge for changing a ticket, even as bigger airlines push up their baggage-check fees.
Under Frontier's new rules, travelers who change a ticket more than 90 days before the flight date will pay no fee; previously they would have paid $99. Changes that are less than 90 days but at least 14 days before will cost $49, half of the previous fee. Changes within the last two weeks will still cost $99. Of course, passengers will still have to pay any difference in the fare.
That compares to fees in the neighborhood of $200 on the major carriers. Daniel Shurz, a Frontier VP, says the new rules "should make us more attractive as an airline to fly, simply because we're offering a better value product." He said the airline expects to see a boost in advance bookings because travelers will not be afraid to plan ahead.
