Swiss activists: Cats endanger climate

A Swiss advocacy wants to ban outdoor cats in the country, claiming that they endanger biodiversity and therefore the environment as a whole—and they are planning to put the issue on the ballot in an upcoming election.

The Swiss Climate Protection Association says it’s not opposed to indoor cats, but says that those that roam outdoors upset the bio-applecart by killing 30 million birds a year, along with half a million lizards, frogs, toads and dragonflies.

Switzerland is estimated to have around 1.85 million cats, but there’s no accurate breakdown among indoor, outdoor and part-time outdoor cats.
