Taj Mahal adds evening hours

The famed Taj Mahal in Agra, India, will soon have visiting hours after sunset in a move to reduce crowding while still accommodating large numbers of visitors. It’s one of ten monuments where the government will try extended hours.

Visitor numbers and crowding have been an issue at the Taj, which is the tomb of Shah Jahan’s favorite wife. Visitor numbers have been capped, and admission fees have been raised to discourage excess visiting, but the site is still getting up to seven million visitors a year.

Using some of the funds from the increased fees, the tourism ministry is planning to light up the area around Taj Mahal and create other facilities to handle night visitors.
