The Daunting Fence

I’ve had an interesting, very busy, and most unusual year.  It’s a year that saw my full-time retirement from the practice of medicine in May.  But rather than fill the year with travel and fun, I’ve moved twice, once from Canada back to our place in the north end of Spokane, the other move from Spokane to our new retirement home in the mountains of northern Idaho.

And it was also the summer of fixing and painting our fence in Spokane.  We have a horse property that’s surrounded by a white three-rail Kentucky-style fence, as you can see from these photos. The fence seems immense to me because I’ve had to paint it a few times.  It’s probably just under one kilometer in total length (about 2/3s of a mile), and it seems that when I finish painting it, it’s time to start over again.

This summer it took 500 – 2″ x 6″ x 8′ boards, 2 gallons of spackling, 12 tubes of caulking, and 60 gallons of paint to complete the job.  But I think it now looks quite nice (although these photos show only part of it).

Does not sound like a fun job (a bit of a nightmare, actually) – but, from what you say, you probably don’t have to do it ever again! In any case, it appears like you’ve done a good job … and the property looks lovely.

The View North

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
