The Gingerbread Mansion, Ferndale, California

I’ve previously discussed our visit to the pretty town of Ferndale in California’s Redwood country.  The town is well known for its charming Victorian architecture, these buildings known as “butterfat palaces” because they were largely funded by the area’s dairy industry.

I thought the most interesting building in Ferndale was the Gingerbread Mansion (previously known as the Ring House), formerly a physician’s home that has now been converted into an upscale Bed and Breakfast.  It was constructed in 1895 in the Queen Anne style and is one of the most photographed homes in California.

The Gingerbread Mansion is the largest residential building in town.  It has been restored and currently has 11 bedrooms, 11.5 bathrooms, and attractive gardens. If you are visiting the area, this link can provide you with further information about the B&B.
