The Original, Butte, Montana

Butte is an interesting city to visit, with lots of historic sites.  Its economy was and still is linked to mining.  Copper deposits predominate in the area, but silver and gold have also been mined here.

There are lots of headframes remaining in Butte, some of them still demarcating active mines.  This one is known as “The Original” — marking the first copper mine in the region.   It was active for almost a century before closing and was associated with the death of 43 miners.  A grim reminder of how risky a profession mining is.
