Tilos, Greece: the first all-green island

Tilos, one of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is about to become Europe’s first all-green island, with power coming entirely from wind and solar sources.

The 500 islanders hope that they will not only set an example for the world, but also solve the problem of their electricity cutting out frequently. The island relies on electricity delivered by cable from nearby Kos, but the cable has been unreliable.

The project involves a single turbine and a photo-voltaic field on the island, funded with grants of €15 million from the European Commission. Turn-on date is set for September. For more details from the Guardian (UK) click HERE
