Senior Sailor's Tips for Better Cruising

Senior SailorThere are many tip lists for successful sailing, but I have a few of my own and some tried-and-true advice.

The app

Download the app offered by your cruise line. It is your ticket to knowing what is going on, making reservations without standing in line, and other features.

Arrive the day before you are set to sail

This tip has been mentioned many times, but I want to reiterate it: If your flight is delayed, the ship will sail without you. And if your luggage is lost (yes, it happens), the airline has a full day to get it to you before you sail.

Bring a carry-on and let the crew deliver your luggage to your cabin

When you board, your room is most likely still being prepared for you, and you'll head for the buffet on the Lido Deck. After eating, you may want to slip on your bathing suit and head for one of the swimming pools, so pack your suit in your carry-on. Also, back to lost luggage, bring a small toiletry kit and change of clothes just in case.

Bring along strong hook magnets. Most ships have metal walls. The hooks are great for hanging your lanyard, hats, and even wet bathing suits at the end of the day.

You can ask for extras

If you need extra hangers, ask. Your steward is your new best friend when you sail. They will take care of your cabin, bring water and ice if requested (most cruise lines), and supply things like robes and slippers (if your cruise line provides them).

Know before you go

Some mega ships—even smaller ocean-going craft—require some getting used to. Study the layout of the ship online before you arrive. Also, read everything available about your boat. Every cruise line and ship are different.

Excursions

Whether you book your excursions before or during your cruise, it is best to study online before choosing. Also, if you book online, you miss the line at the excursion desk and are not disappointed if your excursion is sold out. By booking with the ship, if your excursion is late, the ship will wait. This is one of only a handful of reasons the ship will be delayed departing.

Specialty dining

Almost every ship offers specialty dining, where you pay extra for your dinner. This is reservation-only, and making the reservation online or on the app is easiest.

Onboard

Take advantage of all there is to do. Daily newsletters are delivered to your cabin. If your cruise line has discontinued this policy, ask your steward for a printed copy, otherwise it will be on the app.

There is, of course, nothing like knowledge from experience. But if you are new to cruising, crew members will help you with any questions you may have.

Every cruise line is different. Study the website before you go to understand as much as you can, and then go and have fun.

Bon voyage!
