Trains, planes jumping on futuristic ideas

If it weren't enough that cruise ships are entering virtual reality (see yesterday's Royal Caribbean story), the railroads and airlines are projecting some unusual futures as well.

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn, which is in hot competition with buses and short-haul flights, has shown its future vision in an 'Idea Train' that takes big advantage of one feature that its competitors can't: Open space.

The 'ideenzug' DB showed in Nürnberg last week features play areas for children, a fitness studio with exercise bikes and a digital fitness coach, entertainment options and spacious lounges. It even has comfy pods (above) for sleeping, and noise-cancelling chairs in business class. You might not even mind arriving late!

Meanwhile, Emirates has kicked the first-class wars up a notch with a new first-class offering being rolled out across its 777 fleet as part of a multi-million dollar upgrade. The new design debuted at the Dubai Air Show last week.

The new first class seats have about 40 square feet of private space, and sliding privacy doors. The full-flat bed, above, offers a “zero gravity” position, that is said to simulate the feeling of weightlessness that astronauts experience.

The goodies are not only for first-class; the airline says the rest of the plane will also have an airy new look, with textured wall and ceiling panels, new lighting and more.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
