TSA, Airlines expect record holiday crowds

We're already officially in the 12-day Thanksgiving holiday travel period, and TSA is anticipating a new record for travel, with up to 30 million passengers going through its security lines.

For the traditionally heaviest days of the period, the Tuesday and Wednesday before the Thursday holiday and the Sunday after, TSA expects 2.6, 2.7 and 3.2 million clearances. The 2.9 million would break a record of just under 2.9 million set last June.

Officials at TSA and Airlines for America, a trade group, say they hope the increasing number of passengers enrolled in PreCheck will help lines move faster.

Among suggestions offered to avoid chaos as much as possible: Allow extra time, be extra careful to keep prohibited items (that includes gravy!) out of bags, arrive early, and download your airline's smartphone app for faster check-in and updated information.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
