Vacation postcard takes 43 years to arrive

A postcard showing the Promenade Anglaise in Nice, mailed to an address in the small town of Lorient in Brittany, took 43 years to get there. Mailed in May 1974, it arrived this past July 22nd.

Unfortunately, it has still not been delivered—the recipient is unknown at the address after all those years.

The mail carrier only spotted the long-delayed card when she arrived at the address with the day's mail and noticed that one piece had a name that  didn't match the  address. Then she noticed the postmark.

After interviewing the elderly owner of the bar across the street and several neighbors, she found that  no one  remembered the addressee or had any idea where he might be. He also didn't turn up in records for the address.

The carrier says she'll keep looking, and maybe keep the card for a souvenir. She also wonders what took so long: did someone find it recently and drop it in a box? Was it stuck in a corner of a post office until recently? Or...(cue music) have we entered the...Twilight Zone?

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
