Vienna building Austria’s biggest aquarium

Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo is building a new aquarium, set to be Austria’s largest, with a focus on endangered species of the sea and a huge ‘open seas’ tank with a 12-meter long viewing window.

Construction on the €36.7 million project is to start next year and be finished by 2028. The new facility’s tanks will hold 3 million liters of water, and will include sharks for the first time, as well as a special area for 80 species of jellyfish. It’s to be called the ‘Species Conservation Aquarium Schönbrunn.’

The building is designed to blend in with the existing buildings on the historic zoo grounds near the Schönbrunn Palace. During construction, the aquarium’s current residents will be housed at the zoo’s new aquatic research center.
