Viking sets big expansion for ocean cruises

Viking, until only recently viewed as a river cruise company, has now signed up to potentially more than double its ocean cruise division, with another new ship order.

Viking Ocean Cruises, the sibling of Viking River Cruises, has three years of operation behind it, and three ships in operation (Viking Sky, Viking Star and Viking Sea) has found a niche with its 930-passenger all-balcony ships, and a destination-focused itinerary model based on the Viking River Cruise plan.

The new order is for two more ships of the same model, to be delivered in 2021 and 2022. There is also an option for two more beyond that. Viking Sun and Viking Spirit, as well as an unnamed third ship are already under construction for delivery between later this year and 2019. All the  ships are built by Italian shipyard Fincantieri.
