As a former typographer and designer, my eyes are always open for ‘lovely letters’—well-made signs and texts on the streets and buildings I pass.

Here’s another selection, collected on a springtime trip to England. They vary from formal to a credible imitation of medieval, from ‘old’ to ‘modern.’ Above, two late 19th-century plaques on the city walls of York.
