A lot has happened in the 400 years or so since Shakespeare arrived in London to make a living, and a lot has changed—but not everything he saw is gone.
Like most big cities, has all kinds of themed tours on offer, and now the Telegraph (UK) has constructed a list of 10 places that “can be said to have colored Shakespeare’s world and influenced his writing and which can still be visited today.”
The list omits the obvious, such as the reconstructed Globe Theatre, and concentrated on buildings that he is known to have visited or seen, and some that are “modern places that evoke his world in vivid and surprising ways.” That would include the Southwark Gateway Needle, a recent memorial that graphically marks the spot where the heads of traitors were displayed at the bridge, often for years.
