Where Gumbo Was #4.5: Newport Pier, Newport Beach, California

Winter 2010 325 Newport Beach Pier

Here’s the discussion to go with this WITW.   As you can see from the comment thread attached to theoriginal link, a lot of people had good ideas about this destination.

And how lucky is a city to have not one, but two piers!  Newport Beach always seems to do everything with a bit of flash.

After he was tired of looking at the Queen Mary floating in Long Beach Harbor (WITW 4.0), Gumbo headed down the California coast a little to the Balboa peninsula.  Here had had the option of going onto one of two piers.   The Balboa pier, the furthest south, has a Ruby’s dinner at it’s far end, which you can see is not the case here.

It’s the Newport Pier, which measures 1,032 feet (314.6 m) long and is a California Historical Landmark.  It’s a popular place for people to walk, fish and has a seafood restaurant at its far end (Newport Grill and Sushi) with indoor and outside dining.

Newport Beach is popular with joggers and surfers….

And it’s also a great place for the birds to hang out….Like the pelican below

Or this great blue heron…..

Winter 2010 346 Newport Beach Pier. Blue Heron

Or this egret….

The pier offers some lovely views of the California coast and hills (laughingly called “mountains” by some — hah!)

Winter 2010 344 Newport Beach Pier.

Winter 2010 338 Newport Beach Pier.

So the next time you’re in Southern California, visit one of the 2 piers in Newport Beach.

Hey, everybody: Check in tomorrow for a new Where in the World! It will be on display at 5 am EST. Hope that doesn’t put the West Coast at a disadvantage…but I don’t think anyone is going to get it right away!
