Spirit keeps the pressure on legacy carriers

Spirit strikes again...this time with more non-stops from Philadelphia The ultra-low-cost carrier is taking on JetBlue and American this time, with non-stops from Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale and Detroit. The Spirit "bare-fare" services that it hopes will win it market share competing with the majors on high-density has already pushed all three of the big legacy carriers—Delta, United and American—into offering no-frills fares in competition. (For Gumbo's coverage of that...

Take your seat...while you still have one!

Aircraft designers are always busy trying to figure out the best way to get the most passengers in without actually provoking revolt or suffocation...and the past few days bring fearsome news on that front. Included in the roundup are dead-serious proposals to stack seats in the main cabin, to sell passenger space in the hold below the cabin, and even to squeeze business-class seats into a 12-across configuration. Not even the rich, it seems, are immune to the trend. The stacked-seat idea...

OMG! United brings back the snacks in economy

Just when you thought all the news for back-of-the-plane flyers was bad, United Airlines has announced that starting in February, there'll be free snacks in coach. Not the meals that once there were, but at least a little something to look forward to. It's part of United's "sorry" for the rocky times since its troubled merger with Continental; New CEO Oscar Muniz promised a focus on customer service, and here it is... The change applies to flights that don't already have free food or snacks,...

Attention in the Terminal! Please claim your Boeing 747s.

It's not a story you hear very often, but apparently someone has abandoned their 747s at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).  Not just one, but three of them -- sitting there on the tarmac. Airport authorities have placed an ad in a local newspaper seeking the unknown owner of three Boeing 747-200Fs (2 passenger and 1 cargo planes).  The planes could be sold or destroyed if they fail to be claimed within 14 days, and the revenue so generated could be used to recover fees...

San Diego-Tijuana: Like a bridge over troubled borders...

At a time when border crossings are getting harder in many places, they just got easier at a pair of airports, right across the border and road from each other on the U.S.-Mexico border. By a happy accident, San Diego and Tijuana have twin airports facing each other, and now they have a bridge connecting them, allowing U.S. passengers to fly to many Mexican destinations by crossing the road; at the same time, Mexicans heading for U.S. cities can change planes to fly from San Diego. The key...

United, AA to offer "basic economy"—that's the Spirit!

Ultra-low cost carriers like Spirit are pushing the majors into the no-frills arena. United has announced it will follow Delta next year, and offer "basic economy" style fares with no baggage, upgrade or airport privileges, and American has indicated that it's exploring the idea, too.  Fares like that—Spirit calls it a "bare fare"—have been the staple of flying on the ULC carriers such as Spirit and Frontier, but the majors have resisted up to now because they have wanted to...

Dec. 9, 2015: Multnomah Falls, Oregon

While spending some time in Portland we took a short 30 miles drive outside of Portland to see Multnomah Falls.  On the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge,  this fall is located east of Troutdale, between Corbett and Dodson, along the Historic Columbia River Highway. This 611 foot tall roaring awe-inspiring cascade of icy water lets you experience the power and beauty of nature up close and with ease.   According to the legend, Multnomah Falls was created to win the heart...

Boeing's first 737 MAX hits the runway

Boeing rolled out its first 737 MAX this morning. It's the newest version of the 737, and the one the company is betting on to keep its grip on the single-aisle jetliner market. Next step: test flights and certification before the first airline flights in 2017. It's an important milestone for Boeing, which is facing stiff competition for that market from Airbus's A320. Both companies are offering new-generation versions of tried-and-true planes, and the A320neo, MAX's direct competition, has...

Uber causes a rethink in Danish taxi rules

Denmark is getting ready to revise its taxi regulations, aiming to make the rules more rider-friendly and less controlled by the industry itself, but it is not planning to legalize Uber or similar apps that compete with licensed taxis. Uber began operating in Denmark in November 2014, and was immediately reported to police by the Danish Transit Authority. Drivers have been receiving tickets, but the status of enforcement is not clear. Danish politicians don't want to legalize Uber,...
