Havre de Grace was a primary town on the Eastern Escape Route in Maryland, as slaves could cross the Susquehanna to havens in the free state of Pennsylvania, traveling onward to Philadelphia and New York. Admiral Cockburn's landing under the cover of darkness was assisted by the slaves who joined forces with British Troops. Then onward with their journey to freedom.
