Re: Tampa Bay Automobile Museum: 1) Museum Overview and its Czech collection
Thanks for a look at some cars we never see, even in museums. That Tatra 26-30 is a very odd duck indeed. In the slideshow, you can see it has 3 axles (double in the rear) so it must have been intended for some serious load--and up front, an engine compartment with no grill (and what looks like a hole for an engine crank!) Seriously...you kinda see why there were only 181 made... Looking forward to the rest!

Thank you Drfumblefinger! I had no clue about this museum and his unique collection. I am especially fond of cars I don't see everywhere, and some of those Czech models, I didn't even existed I've been to car museums in Sarasota and the Tallahassee area, so Florida does have its share of good car museums

Re: Tampa Bay Automobile Museum: 1) Museum Overview and its Czech collection
The most popular car in the world is believed to be Czech. The plans for the VW Beetle (similar to the T97 above) were found by the invading forces and were presented to Adolf who then laid claim to it being a German design. Czech cars in Europe are very popular and reliable. Skoda Superb

Re: Tampa Bay Automobile Museum: 1) Museum Overview and its Czech collection
Thanks for the comments, guys. I really was not aware of what beautiful and innovative designs the Czechs had. I can believe that they are reliable. And I can believe that Adolf Hitler was capable of doing almost anything. Stealing the plans for a car seems almost a footnote in his twisted mind.

Re: Tampa Bay Automobile Museum: 1) Museum Overview and its Czech collection
Actually, there are a number of different stories of how Ferdnand Porsche, under Hitler's direction, designed the Beetle. Another fascinating possibility surfaced last year in the Daily Mail (UK), showing similarities to a project by a German Jewish engineer, Josef Ganz, which Hitler saw at an auto show in 1933. Another aspect: the sort of streamlined design represented in all of these cars was not a unique design at the time; aerodynamic research was starting to have an effect on car design...

Thanks for that interesting article Rob. I didn't know that Tatra finally sued Porsche successfully over the T97. I like a story to finish with Justice.

Re: Krumlov Castle, Český Krumlov, Czech Republic. Where Gumbo was #68
I first visited Cesky Krumlov in 1995, when it was still being restored and the tower repainted, as it had deteriorated during the communist period. I would also advise anyone visiting the area also to see nearby Rozmberk, which is a pretty village with a quite impressive castle, but with far fewer tourists (First 2 pictures). Prague is rightly considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but there is much more to see in the Czech Republic including Cesky Krumlov and South Bohemia.

Re: Krumlov Castle, Český Krumlov, Czech Republic. Where Gumbo was #68
Cesky Krumlov like many of the cities behind the old "iron Curtain" seem to be frozen in time. I'm glad I visited eastern Europe before the arrival of McRonalds appeared on street corners. The Czech Republic has produced excellent cars for 50 years but was starved of cash by Moscow for many years. But it's just now become one of the top producers in Europe.

Re: Finding Reiner #8: Trail's End?
It would have been so very nice for you to have found Reiner as an elderly man slowly walking home with the aid of his cane from his daily dip in the mineral spring, and joined him for a revitalizing sip of schnaps and shared with him your journey. How cool would it have been for you to say, "Hi, Reiner. I'm your nephew's wife, Whitney". I think he'd be tickled to no end to know how much you've cared and how hard you've tried to find him.... Sadly, the absence of an ending like this should...

I've travelled to Brisbane Australia looking for clues to my fathers war record. It was a hot summers day when I found Roe Street Barracks - still in use ! I was convinced it would have gone years ago to a development. I stood in the entrance and I felt a shiver run down my back. A feeling I've heard described as "someone walking on your grave"

I too am a big Pils drinker. My wife and I plus another couple stopped over in Pilzen on our way to Prague from our US Army base in Germany just a few years after the wall came down. Got my first delicious taste of Pilsner Urquell and I still buy it today from our local World Market store. What I remember from that restaurant stop for dinner in Pilzen at that time, our steak dinners with all the fixings cost about $7 each and inside each restroom a woman sold sheets of toilet tissue (none...

Re: Touring the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, Czechia
I have a warm feeling about Urquell, and not just because it's good beer. In May, 1945, my father's regiment ended up in a small German town, just across the border from Pilsen, which was occupied by the Red Army. At first, it became routine for the GIs to send a truck across the line to pick up a few barrels. But a few months later, things got frostier, and eventually the Russian company commander began demanding 'papers' before allowing the truck across. My father's regiment commander had...
