Re: Spain's booming tourism hits record numbers
Most countries would envy Spain this particular problem. Given how week other aspects of their economy are, I can't see the government putting a stop on this, despite the actions of some mayors. I'd suggest they look at diverting tourists to less traveled parts of the country. Spain is a large place and there are lots of places tourists hardly ever go.

Re: Brits make exit plans in Greek crisis
I have a feeling things will get very unpleasant in Greece in the next few weeks. I hope I'm wrong, but I think it might be best to travel elsewhere in the coming months while the Greeks deal with their political and economic future.

Re: Guide to Greek Holidays, Summer 2015-style
That's all good information, PHeymont, thanks. No one knows how the Greek people will react to this, but there is a possibility of riots and demonstrations. Perhaps violence -- there is no way of predicting. The crisis will have a major impact on the Greek quality of life. I've heard some estimates that if Greece makes a new currency, it will have only a fraction of the buying power of the Euro, perhaps 25 cents on the Euro. That will obviously not be at all well received but its much too...

Re: Ryanair's exchange rate: Ireland's revenge on Brits?
American Airlines have been doing this for years with £1 = $1 in flight. We can book Ryanair flights using Euros from a UK Bank Card. What's with the "Revenge" angle ? Is it because the Brits have just bailed out the Irish economy with $21 Billion Dollars ? It's only a short time since you thought the Indian Government were taking revenge on the Brits for " an element of payback for the years of the Raj? "

I can only presume that Germany - like the UK - has a lot of dirty money that would set off too many alarm bells - hidden under too many beds !

Flights from the UK to Spain for under $50 helps too. Many families in the UK have bought a Spanish apartment that gets shared with their relatives.

Sounds good - but on smaller items the price always gets rounded up. When the UK went to a decimal system nothing went down to the nearest amount.

Re: German town says 'Nein!' to pennies
Canada got rid of the penny over 3 years ago. As Garry says, usually things are priced so that prices get rounded up to the nearest nickel, although they theoretically can also get rounded down. The reason was basic economics -- it cost about 1.5 cents to make the 1 cent coin. And a penny buys nothing any more. I'm glad to be rid of them.

Re: German town says 'Nein!' to pennies
The proposal to get rid of the penny keeps coming up here, too…and every time it does, it gets shot down by people who feel as if the ground will fall out from under the economy if there are no pennies. I wish we could follow Canada on that one (among other good ideas they’ve had). I’ve got a tray at my desk with leftover coins from here and there, and I’m always amazed by some of the little ones: Italian centimo coins from when they were 1/100 of 1/616 of a dollar. As nearly as I can tell,...
