Re: EU Parliament Ends Cell Phone Roaming Charges in 2017
Yes, it will apply to prepaid plans, which many Europeans as well as visitors use, but it's not as happily absolute as some of the celebrators make it sound. The final June 2017 step depends on a reform of the European wholesale roaming market in which carriers pay each other for roaming use, and is also subject to limits for those who roam "too much." Here's a quote from one of the Parliament members who was a leading proponent of the law (which also originally included provisions for net...

Re: Yesterday & Today in France.
Thanks for those links! truly fascinating. My two favorites are the second, from 1907, which clearly shows a place with almost no change (as opposed to the next where the buildings have remained but so much has not, and the 1911 road scene which at first glance shows little change; a closer look at the combination shows significant re-grading of the road level in the meantime!

Re: Package deliveries snarl Belgian traffic
I've always found this a two edged sword. While there may be more vans delivering packages, there are also thousands less traveling around in their cars going shopping. I'm not sure if you've ever watched delivery vans, but they're very efficient. A UPS driver can drop of hundreds of packages in a city environment in a day. My gut reaction is that online shopping leads to a net reduction in traffic.

Re: Cruisers: American Cars in Stockholm
Funny you should mention old Volvos. Some of my friends would drive nothing else in the 70s, and one of them had a hard time giving up his mid-50s P444. I remember that car well...at one time both doors were bent stuck and we had to go through a window to get in. Before winter, he bent one back into shape...I just saw one on the net...look how simple the dashboard was... http://bringatrailer.com/2013/...ner-1958-volvo-v444/

Re: More Life at the Edge: What’s in a Name?
I admit to a long fascination with the names people choose; clearly whether screen names on websites or as names chosen for daily living, they tell some story of self-reflection, just as PortMoresby's does. What, I always wondered, made someone choose to be J. Edgar rather than just Edgar (or even just John?) That sort is more puzzling to me than the screen names that shout aggression (Warrior, Conan) or whisper softly (Miss Maisie, Teatime) or are ironically self-referential (my favorite...

Yesterday & Today in France.
Jeff Steiner, an American living in France, has a monthly newsletter in which, from time to time, he has a photo feature called Yesterday & Today in which old photos are merged with new ones of the same place and vantage point to create what to me feels a bit like time travel. I don't find one link to them so I'll give you the individual links. I especially like the first one with a group coming up a hill. They seem to be emerging from the past and looking directly at...

Re: UPDATE: CDC rules still rule cruises
