The U.S. has a somewhat similar program. If you are prepared to invest $1,000,000 in a U.S. business that will create 10 jobs ($500,000 if it's in a rural or high unemployment area) you and your immediate family are eligible for immediate green cards for permanent residence. Actually, what surprises me is that overseas tourists keep coming, despite the terrible attitude so many of them encounter from airport Customs and Immigration people, and the whole visa issue.

Very good advice, Rob...and also check with the card-issuer what fees it charges for overseas use...some of them not only charge foreign-exchange fees, but also hefty ATM fees! One idea that may make sense for many travelers: Charles Schwab has a "high-yield investment" checking account that seems almost like a dream. No fees, no minimum balance, no foreign exchange fees, no ATM fees, and if anyone charges you an ATM fee, they refund it. It's linked to an investment account, but you don't...

I know of several people who rely on these prepaid Visa cards during their travels, and it's good to know people need to clarify their use. I usually just travel with credit cards, debit card (for ATM withdrawal), with some cash in a money belt for emergencies.

Re: Travel planning: Japanese travelers like to book way ahead
Some of us need to go out well beyond two months to be sure we get the time off we want (especially popular vacation times like Thanksgiving or Christmas vacation). So I'm very much in favor of planning in advance. Of course this makes it hard to be responsive to great last minute travel deals.

Ah but this has some merits! We are going to Thailand for 57 days, hence we are buying the 60 day visa for GBPounds 25 each (USD 40 - quite good value, I guess). However, if we want to come back in again for 7 days to use Bangkok as a point of exit back to Europe, we appear to have to be prepared to pay the same amount again . I consider it infinitely better to pay a relatively small fee to enter the country than to go through hoops & bother for a visa as we must for a number of Asian countries. Thailand was the first, and I think the only country, where I was required to stop at a booth to pay a departure tax upon leaving the country by air so what possible difference if we pay coming or going (or both?). And I actually prefer the idea of an up front fee rather than having it buried as taxes that can increase...

Wow! Thanks for this fascinating contribution, Lestertheinvestor. I was exhausted just from reading the directions for applying for the visa. It is quite obvious that Saudi Arabia doesn't want infidels visiting them. A few questions you might know the answer to: 1) Is the process stream-lined for a Muslim wanting to go to Mecca, and what kind of proof do they need to have that they're a Muslim? 2) Do you have any rough idea how many hours you spent on this process? Ball-park guess would do.

1) The process is easier for a Muslim who is going on a hajj. However, unless you are native born, you must present a document from the Imam of your mosque documenting your status as a Muslim in good standing. It's been a long path. For a long time, observers thought it was because they were committed to contactless (RFID) technology as the next step...but that hasn't advances as fast as some predicted, and it has big security issues, too. Now that MC and Visa have set down a "you must comply or you will be responsible for fraudulent charges" rule for next year, we're seeing motion. BUT...so far most issuers have been sticking to chip-and-signature, not and-PIN, which guts the whole process.

Not sure, and not sure. We're on a working roadtrip in our 30 foot RV. Been in California for a month for work and will do another 4 weeks in Silicon Valley. Then we'll leisurely make our way back home to Toronto visa Washington, Oregon, and into Canada. So we don't set days or time limits on our travels - just to make meetings and the like!

It's interesting how electronics have changed how we live, isn't it? PHeymont, I liked the kind of snacks you do but a lot of countries completely disallow any type of produce to be taken into their homeland. Usually if it's processed, it's okay, but just dried I'm not sure about. Have you run into troubles with this? New Zealand especially has hefty fines. Can't even bring a dozen eggs from USA into Canada or visa versa.
