Re: Isle of Portland, Dorset, England (Where Gumbo Was #176)

Wonderful collection of photo's PHEYMONT. Lighthouses are full of history. You can tell where you are on the high seas by checking out the colours it's been painted. SatNav from the 19th Century. My cousin has done 30 years in the British Royal Navy and has moved on to Trinity House who control all the lighthouses around the UK. I thought they were all self lighting - but I suppose they all need painting too !

This view answers an observation made to me - on my last US visit from the UK. "Why do English houses have long narrow windows?" No wonder it's so dark in the winter !

GarryRF - my friend, quite right, it must have been terribly cold in those enormous high-ceiling rooms before central heating. A big roaring fire - great but all the heat goes straight up the chimney. So tall narrow windows give maximum light with minimum heat-loss.

Greetings from Texas! I was glad to find this article, as my family and I are planning for a trip to England which will include a visit to this museum! I did want to let you know that there are two fully restored and working Sherman tanks at the Museum of the American GI in College Station, TX, along with an impressively large collection of other fully restored WWII tanks and vehicles, and even a fully restored and functioning French Renault FT-17 from WWI. The Sherman in Dorset isn't the...

On the isle of Portland in Dorset, England, the tip of the isle 'Portland Bill' and nearby Chesil Beach are the graveyards of many vessels that failed to reach Weymouth or Portland Roads.

Part way along Dorset's 95-mile-long World Heritage 'Jurassic Coast' we reach West Bay that nestles under these magnificent 500-foot-high cliffs that glow orange in the lowering sun.

Lulworth Castle, Dorset - the hunts and the fire

This is Lulworth Castle in Dorset, England. Apparently built on the site of an ancient fortified castle. The foundations of this version of the castle were started in 1588 and it was completed in 1609. The castle was actually built as a hunting lodge...
