Re: IRS gains power to get passports cancelled

DrFumblefinger ·
That is too much authority to give this agency, which already has fear-invoking rights of property seizure. I don't see what a revenue collection agency has to do with a citizen's right to have a passport. Maybe the person owing taxes needs to conduct business overseas to pay the Treasury what it says it is owed? How could they do this if they can't travel?

I don't like it either. The IRS has made mistakes before and I'm sure taxes and penalties add up quick if the person doesn't pay in time Plus people from certain states might need their passports to act as ID because they won't be able to get into federal facilities with their state drivers license only and might not be able to fly soon . http://www.latimes.com/nation/...-20160103-story.html

There are so many business men into Tax Avoidance schemes that the Government cant watch them all. So I suppose a warning off Uncle Sam saying - " Hey - I'm serious - behave or I'll ground you" could stop their lavish life styles. If everyone paid their Tax due notice then we wouldn't have all the cutbacks on services.

One tip in renewing your passport. Choose the 52 page book option at no addition cost, instead of the 28 page book, because this year the Department of State no longer adds visa pages into existing U.S. passports.

Re: U.S. passport renewal time takes longer

Paul Heymont ·
I'd think twice about that 52-page book, because it's a lot bulkier and less convenient to carry. I'm in Year 8 of a 28-pager, average 2-3 overseas trips a year, and still have 10 blank pages. Of course, if you're a frequent business traveler, or live near a border, the math might be different.

I've filled up passport books before and now without the option of getting more pages available, that's a big expense. I'm getting the 52 page book option this time and I'll report back after a few trips if it's a problem

That's the point of the fuss...it wasn't bad then, it's getting worse now, and soon will hit a peak—replicating the situation 10 years ago when lots of border-dwelling folks got their first passports. What would really have made sense would have been for them to start last year sending out letters, say in October, to x number of people saying "send in your renewal by 10/31, even though your passport expires in June. We'll take $10 off your fee." And then the same in November, etc. Not to...

To add my update to Dr Fumblinger's , I applied for a replacement passport in March and got mine in less than 3 weeks. Although mine was issued because I lost my passport last summer and I needed to trade in my temporary passport for a regular one. There's a different address that I sent mine to than the passports that expire, so not sure if it translates. Anyway if yours is going to expire, apply for a replacement early

Re: 10 Smart Things to Pack in Your Carry-On

DrFumblefinger ·
That's all very good advice, Samantha. BTW, there have been well documented cases of TSA screeners stealing from your carry-on bags as they move them down the X-ray machines ramp, so I keep my carryon locked unless they want to check it, in which case I unlock it and watch what they are doing. For folks who wear eyeglasses, it's a good idea to have a spare pair of glasses packed in case yours break. Recently while in Morocco, this was a godsend, as my frame broke. Without my spare glasses,...

I don't carry spare glasses, but I do keep a copy of my prescription in a gmail message i can get to. Also a small roll of duct tape, a mini-vial of crazy glue and a plastic coffee cone. The cone takes up no space when filled with socks, etc., and it's my insurance against cranky or unpleasant coffee makers. One sheet of paper towel as a filter and I'm off to a good start!
