Starting to get things planned now Hank ! You have the choice of flying into Edinburgh in Scotland. Manchester in the North of England. Or Gatwick / Heathrow which both serve the London area in the South of England. You can get a Train to Paris to end your tour with a few days of Culture in a foreign language ! Fly back to the US from Paris will save you hundreds of Dollars because you wont pay the UK "Departure Tax" but not vital ! Liverpool is less than an hour on the Train from...

Wow, this is turning into a real education!! I checked with my uncle and yes, I can fly Chicago to Manchester and return from either London or Paris to Chicago. The ticket is free to him and he said he would cover any fees as a "graduation gift to me" (he's a pretty cool dude!), but I don't want to burden him with a heavy departure fee, so maybe Paris would be the way to go. I'd like to leave about Friday, May 9th and return 4 weeks later, June 6th. A few days later and returning a few days...

Wonderful piece of planning WorkerBee ! Missing off London to avoid the $18 Departure Tax for Spain seems a bit severe. I presume your return journey is more direct.

$ 18 ? I am puzzled by this. When I have taken flights from London to the US, the tax has been more like $ 150 - $ 200. It was worth it to spend time in London, of course. Still, it was not a small amount.

The UK departure tax is "Banded" into distances and economy / regular / 1st class. London - Spain is only a short distance.

I don't know much about Germany's import taxes, but there may be taxes on certain classes of merchandise beyond and in addition to VAT. For example, in one country I know of, importing a car is associated with a tax of 100% of the value of the car. And after that, you also pay VAT.

To me, VAT means any tax added onto the price, but I'll defer to the doctor in his quest for exactitude, while also mentioning, neither of us really knows, do we?

I do expect a tax. If it's terrible, my husband will do without a phone. I remember we had to pay a big tax even when bringing in our own (used) car from the USA to use during the two years we lived in Germany. It was cheaper to ship our own car to Germany than to buy or rent one for two years. But, back to to phone...We will update this post with relevant news.

Tax Delinquents Beware - the IRS Comes for Your Passport

Daniel Moore ·
Tax delinquency is not a new thing in the United States. But now, the delinquency is going to cost one dearly. The government of USA is aiming to have a debtors’ prison in the country. It has been known from trusted sources that very soon the Internal Revenue Service will begin to deny passport issuance to some American citizens, who have not paid their taxes. In many cases the passports of tax delinquent Americans might also be revoked. The government will play a pivotal role in making sure...

I get to Boomerang to Spain ! Cheap !

WorkerBee ·
I am traveling Spring 2014 from the US to Spain. I wanted to use my American Airlines frequent flier (AAdvantage) miles to best advantage, so to speak. I learned that it is possible to incorporate free domestic layovers into my journey. As I have family in Dallas, that intrigued me. AA's website showed available flights from San Francisco (SFO) to Madrid (MAD) that connect through Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, New York or Miami. AAdvantage rules require that the layover stops must be on...

Benefits of Self-Drive Cars on Rentals over Taxis & Cabs

Mary ·
With the rising awareness among average Indians, the demand for improved services is on the rise these days than in the past. Nothing exemplifies this phenomenon or the new trend in a better way than the choice of rental cars among people in India. Though the cab culture in India has undergone some changes in recent years, it is still quite a distance away from accepting the idea of self-driven cars. That said, the joys of self-driven cars far exceed the experience of sitting in a passenger...
