Re: Hamburg concert hall: Overdue, Over Budget, Finished
The German government were offering Hamburg as a suitable venue for the Olympic Games. The good people of Hamburg have said they no longer trust developers and politicians. No thank you. I find the new Concert Hall to be a monster on stilts. Not a pleasant view from any angle.

Re: Newgrange; Ireland’s ancient Passage Tomb
On my first visit to Anna Maria I was amazed that the Pelicans would sit next to you on the pier by Allemande Villas. Like a pet dog. They would try and steal your bait as you were fishing. But like a good dog they responded to a "Hey you!" and sat watching you. When I caught my first fish I pulled and fought with the monster! As I lifted my prize from the water my new Pelican friend flexed his wings. He glided off the Pier and with great precision removed my catch from the hook! He passed...

Re: In Egypt: The Egyptian Museum
An item from the UK's Guardian comments on the timelessness & "place-less-ness" of Nefertiti's image. If she'd stayed in Egypt after her discovery at Amarna, she'd likely have a place near her image above with her family, in the photo titled " Scene of worship of the Aten ..." as that's a far more interesting historical context, rather than the following reign of Tutankhamun, in which to put her. I hope the book does her real life justice.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? #86
I learned something new tonight, delving into Gumbo's adventure - "If it doesn’t spout water, it isn’t a gargoyle, it’s a grotesque." I thought for no reason that spouting water was incidental to gargoyle-ness, but it is, apparently, essential. I too, think the building is newer than might be implied by the decoration. The style of stonework above and below the creature seems very modern to me.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Apr. 27, 2014: Painted Ladies in San Francisco
Many Victorian buildings that survived the 1906 earthquake were destroyed in the fires that followed. Those, like these, that escaped both were largely located west of Van Ness Ave, the line at which fire fighters dynamited buildings, creating a fire line to save at least part of the city. I'm glad these were saved, PHeymont, or the City would be a very different place, wouldn't it. Thanks.

Re: Visiting Cuba.
The enthusiasts I've met in the US are looking for genuine cars ! The Cuban guys call these blasts from the past " Frankencars " Like the original Frankenstein's monster these beauties are made of parts from maybe a dozen other cars. Moskvich and Lada engines from Russia. Brakes from China and everything else off the scrap heap! Panel beaters ( now there's a dying trade ) will beat a new wing from the hood of a dead Russian truck in a few hours. You'd be surprised how much these trade for in...

Re: Most overrated travel destinations
It's easy to make a crotchety list of over-rated things, but also important to remember that one man's meat is another's poison. I have no argument with some of the items on the list, but I'd like to speak in defense of some, too. To dismiss Las Vegas as a theme park is to miss the point. It IS an adult theme park, and its wonderful tacky self is why I like it. That and the fact that it's a cheap landing point for Death Valley and the Grand Canyon/Boulder Dam. Never been to Loch Ness, but...
