Re: A Busy Weekend in Philadelphia

Philly really is a beautiful city. Its best feature is it's pedestrian friendly. I love the Architecture and the people there. The Football (soccer) stadium too. It has a slower feel compared to New York. No one rushing to get there - like they're late. I like the smaller stores closing at 5. Behind the counter those folks have got families to go home to. And in Philly the folks stop and talk when you need directions. Best and friendliest Airport north of Florida too. It's a shame that...

Thanks for a fresh new look at Philly. We've just started looking at how many under-appreciated places there are, good places to go but you get funny looks or blank stares when you mention them. You've certainly moved Philadelphia up the charts for me!

I've only visited Philly once, and your post brought back some great memories of a nice city. I visited a few weeks after 9-11-01, a difficult and unsettled time everywhere in North America. But everyone was friendly and agree with Garry. A very walkable city with lots of great architecture and historic sites.

Gary, that's a good point about stores closing at 5 so people can go home to their families, and I'm glad you mentioned that. Sometimes us impatient fast-walking New Yorkers need to be reminded of that. I did love how walkable Philly is, and the slower feel was perfect for a weekend getaway.

Re: The newest, biggest, bestest airport: Aren't they all?

GarryRF ·
I often find that better facilities and more relaxing just mean they've added a shopping mall and an entertainment area to extract more money between gates. So I now have further to walk - and drag my carry-on to get to the gate. Maybe developers see us customers as "Lambs to the slaughter" Squeeze us - until our pockets run dry. I'd be happy if all those moving walkways worked. The cartoon Jetsons never had a problem with them in the 60s. Before they were even invented I think ! Vey...

I confess to a preference for developing world airports - small, simple, friendly places, like the towns they get us to when we choose to fly at all. I realize that I'll likely need to go through one or 2 of these urban behemoths to get to them, and then I'm reminded I'm on the right track again when baggage claim is a few steps into the building and it's a couple of guys who just pushed a cart to an opening in the wall and I can still see the plane.

It's a nicely researched and well-written piece, PHeymont. Thanks. I'm with PortMoresby, though. Given a choice, I'd rather travel to a smaller airport, and avoid these mega-hubs if at all possible. I know at some level you agree with this (based on some of your past comments on Heathrow for example).

Far from Third World except In the minds of Gov. Cuomo and Joe Biden, but Laguardia is my favorite NY airport precisely because it's so much smaller.

Re: Philly's "Rocky Steps" Endangered?

DrFumblefinger ·
PHeymont, as any true fan of the Rocky movies knows, the first time Rocky tackles the steps he does not run. He ascends them at the speed of a sick sloth climbing a tree. The running comes after he has trained for his title fight with Apollo Creed. I think it is the transformation that appeals to many of the movies fans. I'd kind of like these steps preserved, part of Philly and movie culture.

What's amazing to me, more than Rocky, was how it came about. Sylvester Stallone turned down big money for his script because Hollywood wanted it without him being Rocky. And he was broke at the time. He stuck to his guns and eventually got to star in Rocky, becoming a huge movie star. Incredible that he had that much confidence in himself. http://www.philly.com/philly/b...-could-be-Rocky.html
