Re: Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit, Kennedy Space Center

GarryRF ·
Last launch I watched was from the East Coast of Florida - maybe near Cocoa Beach. The Sky was complete darkness, just a few stars and the moon. We were listening to the launch radio station from about T minus 15 minutes - as NASA described the last minute checks. A few seconds before launch time you could see the ground at Cape Canaveral illuminated like a bright white flare. The steam from the launch pad turned into a white cloud and on "Zero" the rocket was moving slowly into the air. For...

PortMoresby ·
I wouldn't dream of occupying while stabling in the train rest room, but in the waiting room? I thought that's what they were for. A wise man, or FaMale, should know better than to leave a nice comfortable clean place and get on a train in some parts of the world. It was a lesson it took me several trains to learn on that trip.

Re: Finding Reiner #6: Frozen Grave

GarryRF ·
Amazing story indeed. I've heard many recollections from veterans of WW2 and all of them beyond belief. When I was a schoolboy (in England) my Math Teacher was in the real "Great Escape" in 1944 and told us boys stories to make your hair stand up ! But when he told us of the Germans making an "example" of repeat escapees his eyes were full of the horrors of war. Then we'd get back to the Math lesson. "Tomorrow we'll found out how we hid the guard dogs!"

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, November 3, 2014: Ceramic Making in Avanos (Turkey)

GarryRF ·
On my first visit to a ceramics store in Turkey I received an interesting culture lesson. The guy in the store was also the producer of these fascinating pieces of artwork. His late father had passed the business to him and that was the family tradition. I struck a good deal on the items I bought and thanked him for his patience in showing me how the ceramics were made - with the help of photographs from his factory. His father had been to Washington DC and was head of ceramics when the...

Re: The Library of Congress: Where Gumbo Was (#65)

PortMoresby ·
I have been there, I'm now reluctant to admit, used the library for some research. I obviously failed to look up. Recognizing the era of the decoration, I guess, is something, but a lesson in not drawing too many conclusions. I obviously need to go back and pay attention to the building, as well as the contents.

Re: From Corfe Castle to Kingston Lacy - Part 1

PortMoresby ·
I almost made it to Corfe Castle once, walking the SW Coast Path, but ran out of steam in Weymouth. That path almost killed me and I decided I was old enough to declare old age and settle for level walks along rivers and canals. And a lesson in paying attention to the spacing of those wiggly lines on the map that warn us of climbs and descents. In any case, between the re-enactors and your pictures, I think this visit is even better. Thanks so much, Mac.

Re: Finding Reiner #2: Chasing Ghosts

DrFumblefinger ·
Another brilliant post, HistoryDigger! Thanks. I think you've described the situation many young German men were in, and it's a lesson for all of us to fight tyranny at every step and with all we have. It is also a reminder to me how a government that is "a friend of the people" can crush those same people if their power isn't checked. After the Nazis had seized power, there was no tolerance for dissent. You were either with them -- or you were in big big trouble (possibly even fatal...
