You might be amazed at how many pharmacy museums there are, aside from the one in Heidelberg...this LINK takes you to a 100+ page list of them in the U.S. and Canada. We've also found them in Spain and Italy, and just now noticed that there's one in Krakow, where I believe you are at the moment! Here's a LINK to that one!

In Spain they take the largest, roundest fruits. Cut off the top and scoop out the inside. Fill with Lemon flavour Ice Cream and put the top back on. Wrap in food wrap. Freeze them. Buy them in the store next to the Ice Lollies. No drip Ice Cream !!

Interesting clues here but nothing definitive. The vegetation growing through the cobblestones might indicate a moderate climate throughout the year. This path appears to be residential and not one frequented by tourists. Maybe Mediterranean or a colonial city in the Americas. The cobblestones are on the small side and are more common, I think, in southern Europe. England is only as big as Florida ! I haven't seen a Guide book that sub-divides us! Wales is full of Castles, Mountains and Lakes. Tourists often divide England between the North and South. The North is often cooler and wetter than further South. But your Dollar will go twice as far up here in the North! And we're much friendlier. Have a look at places you'd like to visit. York (the old one) will keep you busy for 2 days. Train or Bus from Liverpool. Or a day or two in Europe from Liverpool...

I know that hand painted ceramic tiles are popular there in Portugal and Spain. But they can get heavy. Maybe wrap them in your clothes, but they'd be nice gifts I think. Put them up on a wall, use them for hot pots or a hot drinks.

The Ferries provide an overnight stop on your journey to France and Spain. Leaving in the evening and landing at dawn near to your destination. Many tickets include a cabin for 4 people for the family. Or First Class recliner seats in economy. Many travellers still hate the thought of flying and keep the ferry alternative alive and thriving.

During our lives we will meet 5 or 6 people who leave us with an impression of just having met a great man. Sounds like Hans' was one of your handful of heroes. We try to understand what makes him so outstanding. Then in our own way we try to copy some of his finest attributes. And hopefully we are a better person for it.

I find "...Spain is only on top if the Balearics are included..." an odd addition, not unlike saying the US is only on top if Hawaii is included. Am I missing something?

The report I took figures from made that distinction, likely because some sources report report figures separately for Balearics and Canaries. In that light, I thought it useful to mention. Since the context was the thin margin for Spain over Greece, I will venture a guess that separating Greece's islands from the mainland would drastically alter the rankings.

I booked a rental car earlier today for a forthcoming trip to Portugal/Spain. I had toyed with the idea of going for something a bit bigger than the smallest category - which is what I usually book - but your article reminded me of the potential issues with very narrow streets in this part of the world. So a 'mini' car it is (Renault Twingo)!

Garry, I haven't read Frommers England yet .I read the new France and Spain Guides and I liked them so I'm hopeful about England. Frommers is incuding different price ranges now and from what I've seen ,it's a lot more budget choices too

My first thought was the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, but from what I remember, it was on a river, not a harbour. I still favour a fishing port with some yachts, possibly in Northern Spain. However, I may be literally half a world away!

The striped pattern an archways remind me of what you see in the Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain. In Cordoba, the earlier portions get their color from different colors of stone, and the later ones were painted. Which way is it at Rila? Thanks for the view!

Amazing piece of engineering. Had a really long look at the road and I couldn't see any donkeys. Just like the mountain roads in the Sierra Nevada, Spain which don't have the luxury of the walls at the roadside. Great fun on a bus with 6 inches to spare on those bends !

Most countries would envy Spain this particular problem. Given how week other aspects of their economy are, I can't see the government putting a stop on this, despite the actions of some mayors. I'd suggest they look at diverting tourists to less traveled parts of the country. Spain is a large place and there are lots of places tourists hardly ever go.

Thank you! I visited Spain in July, and temperatures were around 30-35 degrees. Pretty hot At the time, I didn't have a good camera with me, so I only took photos with my phone. This is a difficult one, but the recent clues may help. Famous cultural centres at one end of a country with palm trees in the past few years are few. I can think of Sydney Opera House and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Maybe this building is in Southern Spain, although I don't know where.

You'd love the Canary Isles. Volcanic islands off the north west cost of Africa. Its a winter hotspot where the islands belong to Spain. Its party time all year and a favourite with the younger set. Its famous on Tenerife for young men to drive up Mount Teide in winter and collect snow from the peak in Cooler Boxes. Drive back down to the 77'f / 25'c beaches and throw snowballs at the topless sunbathers. Might be a bit too much for non-Europeans !!

A timely post, PHeymont. Trying to simplify a proposed trip to the UK and Portugal, and also slip in a bit of Spain along the way, I'm seriously considering the ferries from the south coast of England to Bilbao & environs, then train down to Portugal. I'm sure it will save me money, as opposed to trains, using the ferries, most of which I wasn't aware of until I took a good look at the broken lines showing ferry routes on Google maps.

I think people are exchanging visiting GREECE now for a lot of other European countries too besides Spain and Portugal. Avoiding uncertainty in travel is very hard to do though when you travel no matter where you go as i've found out with a lost passport and ferry strikes

Most buildings are non-descript, but one roof is slightly ornate, possibly Iberian. The tidal variation looks too much for the Mediterranean, so I wonder if this is Atlantic Spain or Portugal. Argentina is another possibility.

I didn't feel the snark on this one. I liked that it wasn't just what was popular or trendy. Spain being number one is a great choice, although I would have chosen Italy. Rankings can be fun, and can start (hopefully) some dialog.

I hate the bag fees, but they're not the problem. The TSA is. Everyone would still have a carry-on bag, albeit a smaller one if they could check a suitcase for free. My experiences in Calgary, Frankfurt and Spain in the past month. Waiting times were never more than 10 minutes and usually less than 5 minutes to be screened. You just need enough of and a motivated staff that gets people through quickly

Okay, it is hard to see what is in the dome, but the art work outside the dome is definitely civil and not religious. There is a seascape in one corner. So Spain or Portugal are my first guesses.

PHeymont has given you some excellent advice, Travel Luver. By all means, spend some time in Iceland. If you can fit it into your trip, 4 days would be my minimum stay here. As Paul pointed out so well, Iceland is unique. It is also very sparsely populated, with only 300,000 people on the island and two thirds of those living in Reykjavik. And it is a newly form volcanic land with tons of glaciers, waterfalls, and geothermal events. So by all means, see it. When you land at Keflavik airport...

The Aussies have everything that we have in the UK. Full of Brits. Mostly second generation. Vegemite is just the same as Marmite. A touch sweeter and now produced by the World Dominating KRAFT Co. Kraft also bought out a few English Brands and shifted production to Spain and Holland. Demolished the Factory with undue speed ! Don't you just hate it when that happens !!

I envy your trip! We'll overlap in time, but not in place. If you do add France to the itinerary, you might want to look into the new TGV service from Barcelona to Paris that starts this month. I'm not sure of its route as it leaves Spain, but it might go where you want to!
