Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Jan, 21, 2014: Raccoon, Vancouver, British Columbia

DrFumblefinger ·
Yes, that sounds about in character for them. Cute, but cunning. When there is a global Holocaust someday, it will not be the insects that take over the world. It will be the raccoons! Or at least the raccoons will be the commanders. The insects might be their foot soldiers.

Re: A visit to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello

DrFumblefinger ·
PHeymont, I never try to judge historic figures through the prism of modern values. Remember in the 18th century slavery was a global institution -- absolutely every country in the world had slaves. And being from Virginia, he knew the southern states wouldn't join northern colonies in forming a new country without slavery being allowed, so I don't think he thought it was time to fight that fight. I think he valued the formation of the new country above all else -- risking his life to do so...

People eat out a lot in xxx because the prices are reasonable, there is a great variety of types of restaurants - thanks to its status as a city of global commerce - and you can be sure of getting lots of free air conditioning .

Re: WiFi on the way for international flights

DrFumblefinger ·
Geosynchronous orbit is only close enough to planes flying in that area (ie. around the equator). A plane flying the polar route from North America to Europe won't be able to connect with a geosynchronous satellite. They will be connecting with a series of lower altitude satellites, not unlike global satellite phone system. These satellites are moving quickly, as is the plane.

Re: Good news, bad news on UNESCO's world heritage

DrFumblefinger ·
I enjoy traveling to UNESCO sites because most of them are very interesting destinations. I even know of some travelers whose goal it is to see "every" UNESCO listing. Good luck to them! I really think UNESCO is doing it's job by identifying important places and encouraging their conservation. I shudder at the thought of a global UNESCO police swooping in to "defend" these sites. It's up to the countries that govern them to do so. Some do a great job; others don't. Some citizens care, others...

Re: Florida warned: take action against future flooding

Paul Heymont ·
Garry, aside from the fact that climate change involves far more than the question of polar ice caps, we're not in huge disagreement, I think. 1. Climate change is a more accurate term than global warming, because it's not all about warming, and in some cases the change brings colder rather than warmer. 2. The effects are not the same everywhere, nor are they always immediately harmful. It is possible for one area to be threatened with inundation while another benefits from a return of...

Re: Getting to know Canada's hidden gems

GarryRF ·
I knew the Vikings travelled a thousand years ago. They settled in Greenland too. They wrote that Greenland was a land of cows and meadows and obviously green too. I just wondered if history had further proof of a time when Global Warming was just a natural cycle. The Indian tribes have been nomadic for centuries and I wondered if they could survive a long winter without retreating to a warmer south.

Re: Weaker 'loonie' good and bad news for Canada travel

DrFumblefinger ·
With the fall especially of oil prices (and other natural resources, which Canada is a major producer of), the loonie has indeed fallen compared to the US dollar but kept its relative value with most other currencies, including the pound and Euro. It seems despite a reasonably healthy economic profile, including until recently an almost balanced federal budget and low debt-to-GDP ratio, the value of the Canadian dollar is pegged to its natural resource valuation. With the pullback in the...

Re: Welcome to England! Brits expedite your entry

As it's described in the article, it appears the government wants fees for things like this to pay the costs of other immigration programs...I wonder if that explains the sizable fees for the U.S. Precheck and Global Entry programs, which Gumbo reader Sisyphus asked about on the forums the other day. (Here is a link to that discussion Is Pre-check or Global Entry worth it? ) The article also says it may be available to some regular-visitor travelers from US, Canada, etc. Wonder if they'll...

Re: Tampa Bay Automobile Museum: 3) cars from the USA and UK

DrFumblefinger ·
All good information to know, rbciao! I think cars and travel mix quite nicely and nothing better than having a reason to go somewhere. I do recommend the Tampa Bay Automobile collection, but it is mostly focused on cars of the 1930s and 1940s and is not just American, but global in its scope. The last piece in this series will feature the French car collection, likely the museum's best. The owner of the museum and car collection is originally from France.

Re: Tuktoyaktuk: A village on the Arctic Coast of Canada

GarryRF ·
Hi Tom. I live in the UK. We're not lovers of cold weather, but we did have a night 10 months ago when it fell below freezing for a few hours. Some say "Global Warming" but I say the Jet Stream got stuck in its usual "Summer" position and Caribbean winds kept us warm. We don't have a mosquito problem here ( 200 miles north of London) but I'm curious to know. Are there any noticeable changes to your weather ? Longer summers or wetter winters ? I remember studying the shifting Polar Ice Caps...

Re: Tuktoyaktuk: A village on the Arctic Coast of Canada

My Thatched Hut ·
I don't know much about global warming. I suspect that pollution contributes to it, but these things also happen on their own as we know from ice ages and warming periods in the past. I have noticed long periods of warm weather but then it gets cold again. I have read that the Arctic ice is melting but this coming winter is predicted to be very cold here in Canada. Although I have travelled in the Arctic, I have not spent enough time there to observe any climate changes. There are scientists...
