Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #8.5

WorkerBee ·
What a beautiful church Gumbo has found! WITW? The clues: 18th century Spanish colonial architecture, typical of Franciscan missions; Banner in English; Materials are not typical of Florida or Texas missions; Various effigies of animals and unreal creatures, often incorporated by the Franciscans into their liturgy in order to convert American Indians. Typical of US southwestern states; Not one of the remaining California missions; Not in Santa Fe; Checked missions in Arizona. Found (as did...

Thanks so much, DrF, for sharing these with us. I especially love the ones of San Francisco in 1940, where I can picture my teenaged father walking. And of Tucson, my own stomping grounds for many years. So many familiar places. Just fantastic.

Re: What do travelers like least about airlines?

Travel Rob ·
I was thinking about what I like least about airlines and it's really the lack of info some airlines supply you with. I recently had two good flights on American Airlines. One from Atlanta to Phoenix and then a connector plane to Tucson. So you'd think that would be a positive experience. During my short layover in Phoenix though , American Airlines changed gates of my plane at least 4 times, having passengers move to gates and await various countdowns. The flight was only delayed about an...

Re: Marriott to offer free wi-fi to all its Rewards member

PortMoresby ·
In my experience, loyalty is built with perks the customer doesn't have to think about or read the rules to decipher. I always stayed at the same hotel in Tucson prior to flying out because they were happy to let me leave my car indefinitely. I didn't have to figure it out. The wifi issue is the same, just give it to everyone. Nickel & diming leisure travelers will, I suspect, often lead them to look at other options every time they book a hotel.

Re: A Visit to the “Spine Garden:”Cactus in Arizona’s Sonora Desert

DrFumblefinger ·
As it snows and storms outside, a welcome diversion! I find all cacti interesting but there's something captivating about the saguaro forest around Tucson. While visiting Saguaro National Park (years ago, before it was a national park), I remember a newspaper clipping tacked onto the park's information board. The headline read something like "Saguaro cactus involved in double homocide". Seems a drunk yahoo with a shotgun drove out to the desert to kill himself a giant saguaro. He did, the...

Glad you like the pictures IslandMan. Yes Calgary and near by Banff National Park are beautiful parts of the world worth visit. If you are not into ski, summer (please note, it is very short here) is the best time to come. Let me know, I will take you to the best spot to see the bridge! Have a good day. Dr.Y

Completely agree with my colleague and dear friend. (Folks may not know that Dr.Y and Dr.F are specialists in the same field). If you want the best weather and maybe to attend the Calgary stampede, come in early July. Warmest weather (and the summers are beautiful, non humid and the days long) is July and August. My favorite time of year is in September, especially the week after labor day. The crowds are greatly thinned, the weather is still lovely, and the alpine areas of the mountains are...

In that third picture, the skyscrapers seem almost to float in a different plane from the foreground...Great image! By the way, near the bottom right of that picture, I can just make out another interesting-looking bridge--can someone tell us a bit more about that?

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day. January 14, 2014: Calgary Peace Bridge

Dr.Y ·
You have sharp eyes PHeymont! The third and fourth pictures are taken from the Crescent Hights, a small hill on the North bank of the Bow River. In the Calgary downtown core area, there are three bridges (tow for pedestrians and cyclists; one for cars) connecting the skyscrapers on the South bank and residential areas on the North bank of the river. The peace bridge is out of the picture 3 frame and in all other 3 pictures.

DrY, is that bridge (bottom right) maybe the one the C-train (public transit) takes across the river?

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day. January 14, 2014: Calgary Peace Bridge

Dr.Y ·
The bridge on the bottom right of the picture 3 is called Bow River Pathway. It's a pedestrian/cycling bridge connecting the downtown ore - Prince's Island Park - The North bank of Bow river. The Peace bridge and C-train bridge are further west! Ha Ha Karl, you need get out more

I do need to get out more! Of course, I live south of downtown while you look at this view every day. We'll need to go for a walk there this summer, DrY! Prince's Island is a great place for those visiting Calgary. A lovely island oasis right off downtown. Wonderful escape from bustle of a city and literally just a minute from it all.

This bridge is neat. When Evan and I were doing our walkabout through downtown and then to the university we crossed the Bow and headed west. A couple of minutes later we came across this bridge and experienced some crosser's remorse at our previous choice of bridge.

I never did shake hands with Doc Holiday or Wyatt Earp, Mac, and since Doc Holiday probably died of "consumption" (tuberculosis), hope you were wearing a mask and washed your hands after you did. Good point about Bisbee -- a great small historic town with a grand old hotel, the Copper Queen . The scale of the open pit mine is hard to fathom, but worth a look. If you're staying in Tucson, both Tombstone and Bisbee can be combined into a day trip from there.
