I was driving across Poland to Czech Republic in October and decided to spend a night in Cracow and was surprised by several things: The town was jumping on a weeknight, which made hotels expensive (relative to other places in Poland), and a vacancy hard to find. Everyone in town seemed to be under 30 years old, kind of the Portland of Eastern Europe. Parking was hard to find and costly. The obwarzanek seems very similar to the Turkish simet, sold on corners all over Istanbul, and also cheap. Mostly sesame version, but occasionally others. A really good snack, and also excellent with kaymak, the buffalo milk creme fraiche.

Nice to hear that American is doing something to improve the experience of its economy customers. Now if only they got rid of that annoying checked bag fee.

Regarding "that annoying checked bag fee", the problem is not the fee, it's that you aren't going far enough. Fly internationally and don't pay a fee. Or is that not true between Canada & the US?

Baggage fees apply for most airlines flying between Canada and the USA. The 'free bag' is for intercontinental flights, so far as I can tell.

American Airlines have been giving excellent service since their merger. I've only flown UK to US and back but their cabin staff have been courteous and charming. Must mention Bernie by name - what a wonderful charming man. Not so young, but he came back later into the flight to thank me for complimenting the crew. No charges for luggage - free drinks AND ice cream. I'm flying with them again in 10 days. Then Frontier to Miami. Am I in for a shock ?

Yes, Garry. I expect the last leg of your flight will be somewhat of a shock after your American pampering.

It's only 3 hours but I guess I'll be hammered for my luggage !

Most of my flights on American have been international, and the crews have been excellent (and you get snacks as well as meals.) On domestic flights, they've been just as nice, and usually my credit card has waived the baggage fee. That's never what I hear from people flying Frontier! By the way, one AA oddity: there's no free baggage on some international flights; Mexico City is international, but Cancun is domestic for baggage purposes. Caught me blinking on that one!

That's all very good advice, Samantha. BTW, there have been well documented cases of TSA screeners stealing from your carry-on bags as they move them down the X-ray machines ramp, so I keep my carryon locked unless they want to check it, in which case I unlock it and watch what they are doing. For folks who wear eyeglasses, it's a good idea to have a spare pair of glasses packed in case yours break. Recently while in Morocco, this was a godsend, as my frame broke. Without my spare glasses,...

I don't carry spare glasses, but I do keep a copy of my prescription in a gmail message i can get to. Also a small roll of duct tape, a mini-vial of crazy glue and a plastic coffee cone. The cone takes up no space when filled with socks, etc., and it's my insurance against cranky or unpleasant coffee makers. One sheet of paper towel as a filter and I'm off to a good start!
