Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? 21.0
I was thinking West Indies...but I couldn't identify the flag (and I looked at a LOT of flags, yesterday!). If it's in the U.S., it must be Florida or California, because that's where beaches and palms might come together...

Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #36
Still no correct solution, so time for some clues. 1) Yes, PortMoresby, that is a Canadian flag on top of the building (but, does that mean it's in Canada????) 2) It is close to an important river and surrounded by more than 1000 acres of parkland Does that help you figure out where Gumbo is?

Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #36
Time for a little more information. 1) GarryRF, it is not a theme park in the sense of Disneyland or SeaWorld. But it is part of a park that covers over 1000 acres 2) I was teasing about the flag. It is a Canadian flag, and it is flying in Canada (although I've seem them fly in embassies and theme parks (Epcot for example) in other countries. Does this help us figure out where Gumbo is?

Re: Gifts to bring back from Portugal or Barcellona
I am no shopper so I try to make this gift-buying task easy. When I arrive at the large entry airport, I like to stretch my legs, get a cup of takeaway coffee, and cruise the airport gift shops. Almost always, I can find little magnets of the country flag, local tiles, miniature photos, the sports team, or handiwork mounted on refrigerator magnets. I pick up a few of those and am good to go for my visit. One more thing off of my list. Refrigerator magnets are easy to carry, no problem with...

Mean of you to wait for the wind to drop so that the flag is difficult to identify. Probably a good clue though.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo, #60
The flag looks familiar and if I'm not mistaken, that brown blob is the bear on the CA state flag. If so, I think that narrows down the search for type of tree considerably.

Re: Stockholm's "blue hall", where the Nobel awards reception dinner is held each year
Garry's got it right. It was initially to be painted blue (like the Swedish flag), but the architect so loved the look of the space he left it as it was when made. Still, the name stuck. Sort of like Tunnel Mountain in Banff, which was to have a railway tunnel blasted through, although the rail was diverted and no tunnel ever made.

Re: How do you buy your travel?
Few more thoughts, following HistoryDigger and DrFumblefinger... 1. Definitely check all your affiliations on car rental; after years of getting better price through AAA than any other way I knew, I recently found that going to the same vendors through USAA (my car insurance) gets me even better. 2. Not only does Priceline have good pricing on cars, I've often found I can get 30-40% lower through their blind-bidding (Name Your Own Price) service. 3. RailEurope is something of a red flag for...

Re: "New American" May Get Old Look: Employees to pick design
The new one is too flag-like for my taste. There's a time and a place for flags and I'm not sure a corporate logo is one of them. I'm not suggesting we, as a country, should try to blend in but using our flag in your face that way is not, in my opinion, putting it to it's best use. The word "American" should be enough and the slightly retro look of the old design is recognizable and far more interesting than the new graphic flag version. I hope they don't choose change for the sake of...

Re: Chinese visitors shop the USA
Chinese tourists like branded luxury items. With stitched in brand tags. They can buy fake goods that are made in China - but they want originals that look good ! They love English made goods with our Flag stitched in. They want Store bags that have recognisable names and Logo's to carry them in. And they want their photo with big name stores in the picture !

Some of the best long haul flights stop off in interesting places. That's why I love taking a few days in San Francisco. And Hawaii. Mainly because I can walk for miles. So many US cities are not "Pedestrian friendly" I'm off to search the internet for Kona Coffee ! I have noticed that the Islands have the most memorable Flag of all the US States ! Thanks DrF !

Re: Hawaii: Coping with Hurricane Ana
That flag must have been inspired by Captain Cook. And we all know what happened to him on these islands....(if you don't, google it).

Re: Hawaii: Coping with Hurricane Ana
The Flag was adopted 70 years after the death of Cook. It was designed by the Head of the Hawaiian Navy. Who's previous employment was with the British Royal Navy.

What no comments? Not much to go on here. Two pigeons - not exactly location-specific. Can't make out tiny flag. Seems coastal. Appears as a lighthouse - but probably fake. Recently painted but not in the best of shape.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#74)
The spelling of "Harbor" indicates the US, and the angle of the sun suggests the southern half. I suspect if it were California, there are Travel Gumbo bloggers who would have recognised it by now. There is a flag with a single star - could this be an old version of the flag of Texas? So what about the Texas coast somewhere?

Looks like its some kind of park. Still favor a flag being raised over a bat held up -- maybe the gamekeeper can clarify with a clue. If a flag, it has overtones of a revolution and I'd favor France then, probably Paris. The minibleacher invites the tykes to come -- play along with the French Revolution game. PHeymont has not shown us the mock-up of the guillotine beside this display (if it exists).
