Re: Yes, Winter's coming: France gets first snow
Hurricane Joaquin crossed the Atlantic and got split in two by the jet stream. France got trapped in the middle of the two. Allowing cold air from Siberia to blow across northern Europe. So the Geese have arrived here on the wind too. 3 Weeks too early. Its what the remnants of Hurricanes do.

Re: Yellowstone National Park in Winter
Thanks so very much for making us a part of your fascinating road-trip by sharing your visit to this unique place at such a special time. It's so rare to actually talk to someone who visited Yellowstone in the winter, much less to read such a wonderfully written report and to share in your experience through your beautiful photos. I'm sorry you didn't get to see wolves in the wild, but in this you are not alone. As many times as I've been in the wilderness, I've yet to see them (though I was...

I was in Turkey last May. Watching the evening shows in the outdoor theatre was really cold. The hotel staff came out with blankets for those without a heavy coat . You can buy any make of watch for under $10 ! Best Golf courses I've seen and all reasonably priced. The Montgomery Golf course was excellent. Look for Belek as an alternate place to stay. I really enjoyed it !

Re: Arctic Birds on Migration: Saskatchewan
I know how much U love birds, birding and nature, Tom, and you've give all of us who are even vaguely interested a reason to head up to Saskatoon. Of the many great birds you document, the one that has fascinated me the most is the whooping crane. Standing almost as tall as a man, it was at one time even closer to extinction than the California Condor. I'm far more optimistic about the Whooping Crane's survival than the Condors, and I really would love to see one of these in the wild.

Re: Arctic Birds on Migration: Saskatchewan
All of these birds pass through Saskatoon during October. The Whooping cranes fly from the Northwest Territories in two or three days flying time and then stop for a couple of weeks near Saskatoon before flying on to Texas. I have been to their breeding grounds in the north and their wintering grounds in Texas so I have seen about 30 or so of them. They don't migrate in large groups like geese. They travel in family groups so five or six of them will arrive at a time. Some will reach Texas...

Re: Dry winter shakes up Alpine ski and travel industry
This photo could be California for the last several years. I have a friend near Milan who mentions the drought regularly. But the CA snow pack for the last couple of months is well above normal now, with more expected, so I suspect the same will be true before too long in the Alps. If one's heart's desire is a having a business free from outside effects (weather, war, politics, etc.) maybe tourism isn't it.

Re: Dry winter shakes up Alpine ski and travel industry
You may well be right about what's in store for those ski areas; below is the Accuweather summary for this winter in Europe. It appears that those ski areas are in line for some harsh weather before winter is over, although they've already lost considerable business. Our forecast in New York is for a "snow drought," and after last year, I'm ready for one!
