Re: April 24, 2018: Thirsty?
And not the first time for a toilet as a museum exhibit. The Guggenheim in New York last year had a solid-gold working replica by Maurizio Cattelan, entitled America, that could be used by visitors. And, famously, in 1917, Marcel Duchamp challenged concepts of art and esthetics by exhibiting a 'readymade,' a standard urinal turned on its edge, signed as if by an artist, and labeled... Fountain.

I keep a toilet roll on my work bench. Perfect size for drying WD 40 off my machine parts and grease off my fingers. Everyone who spots it says it's disgusting. Maybe I should call it Bathroom Tissue !

It's important to teach the children that winter is there to be enjoyed too. It's never bad weather - just the wrong clothes !

That's a good point, GarryRF! People who live in places with cold climates do adapt and most involve their kids in out door activities -- winter or summer. For example, downhill skiing is very popular. But that walk with the penguins intrigues me. I've never heard of this except, of course, in Antarctica. Need to go by and check it out sometime.

Re: Gasoline Alley: The signs
That's a great collection! I remember many of them from childhood trips in the 1950s, and in others I see signs with familiar shapes and designs, but Canadian names...also quite a few that remind us of commercial history...Richfield Oil before Atlantic Richfield before ARCO, for instance. I'm beginning to think my day in Calgary at a teacher conference a few years ago was spent in the wrong part of town!

Re: Calgary Farmers' Market
Wonderful pics. Is this the market on the former military base? That was one of our favorite reasons to drive into Calgary when we were in Canmore! The was a wonderful pit shop in the food court - best savory pies around!

Re: Calgary Farmers' Market
Thanks for your comments, Lester and Jonathan. There are several Farmers Markets in Calgary because it is a fairly large city (well over a million people). This featured market is the one on Blackfoot Trail, close to 77th. There is a market more on the western end of town which would be closer to Canmore. And both have those great savory pies, which are delicious

Glad you like the pictures IslandMan. Yes Calgary and near by Banff National Park are beautiful parts of the world worth visit. If you are not into ski, summer (please note, it is very short here) is the best time to come. Let me know, I will take you to the best spot to see the bridge! Have a good day. Dr.Y

Completely agree with my colleague and dear friend. (Folks may not know that Dr.Y and Dr.F are specialists in the same field). If you want the best weather and maybe to attend the Calgary stampede, come in early July. Warmest weather (and the summers are beautiful, non humid and the days long) is July and August. My favorite time of year is in September, especially the week after labor day. The crowds are greatly thinned, the weather is still lovely, and the alpine areas of the mountains are...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day. January 14, 2014: Calgary Peace Bridge
You have sharp eyes PHeymont! The third and fourth pictures are taken from the Crescent Hights, a small hill on the North bank of the Bow River. In the Calgary downtown core area, there are three bridges (tow for pedestrians and cyclists; one for cars) connecting the skyscrapers on the South bank and residential areas on the North bank of the river. The peace bridge is out of the picture 3 frame and in all other 3 pictures.

DrY, is that bridge (bottom right) maybe the one the C-train (public transit) takes across the river?

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day. January 14, 2014: Calgary Peace Bridge
The bridge on the bottom right of the picture 3 is called Bow River Pathway. It's a pedestrian/cycling bridge connecting the downtown ore - Prince's Island Park - The North bank of Bow river. The Peace bridge and C-train bridge are further west! Ha Ha Karl, you need get out more

I do need to get out more! Of course, I live south of downtown while you look at this view every day. We'll need to go for a walk there this summer, DrY! Prince's Island is a great place for those visiting Calgary. A lovely island oasis right off downtown. Wonderful escape from bustle of a city and literally just a minute from it all.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day. January 14, 2014: Calgary Peace Bridge
This bridge is neat. When Evan and I were doing our walkabout through downtown and then to the university we crossed the Bow and headed west. A couple of minutes later we came across this bridge and experienced some crosser's remorse at our previous choice of bridge.

Re: Gallery: The Colors of Summer
Hi PHeymont, Travel Rob, DrFumblefinger, Thank you all for the comments. Yes, planting and watching flowers grow in the backyard is one of my favorite pass times in the summer. Here in Calgary, Canada, although the growing season is short, the flowers seemed to know how to take chances! The resulting beautiful blossom and brilliant colors make all the hard work worthwhile .

Re: The flowers are saying, 'it's spring!'
Well, our Brooklyn summer lasts longer, but we've had a surprisingly short spring after a tough winter—and to my surprise, our New Dawn roses—the pink ones in the pictures— are in full flourish a few weeks earlier than usual. In some climates, they're supposed to have a second bloom in October, but after years, we can only hope. That's all one New Dawn, over 25 years old...even when cut back to a stump it quickly and aggressively reclaims its territory.

Re: "Stars of the Big and Small Screen": Hollywood rolls into Calgary
Great collection...and as a comics fan, great name for the museum! Interesting thing about movie cars...they really CAN be stars. I think there are lots of us who can't tell you the plot of any James Bond movie, but remember exactly what 007's car did! Reminds me...we had an earlier discussion of movie cars on TravelGumbo. Worth re-reading, too...
