Farmers in Scotland have taken to spray painting their sheep in an effort to stop sheep rustling. The first effect has been bus loads of Japanese tourists wanting to stop and take photos. What next ? They'll soon be selling orange sweaters to tourists..

Wow! This has been very helpful, especially the tip about the Youth Hostels. I'm definitely going to look into that. I think staying at a hostel can help me stay within my budget. I'd really like to go to the UK if at all possible. I know there are cheaper places, but there's only one England and I've always wanted to see it. I think I'd like to spend maybe a week in London then head into the country, maybe doing a circuit to include parts of Wales and Scotland. I need to do some thinking...

Again thanks, this is incredibly helpful!! So I think I'll look at trains for trips from bigger cities to other cities, and fill in the gaps with bus if the pricing works out. A little more planning is needed. Even though it's expensive, I do want to spend around a week in London. Being an architect, there's just so much to see and do there, like seeing the Houses of Parliament and Westminister Abbey. I plan on being on the go almost all day each day there -- can rest later, maybe in the...

Starting to get things planned now Hank ! You have the choice of flying into Edinburgh in Scotland. Manchester in the North of England. Or Gatwick / Heathrow which both serve the London area in the South of England. You can get a Train to Paris to end your tour with a few days of Culture in a foreign language ! Fly back to the US from Paris will save you hundreds of Dollars because you wont pay the UK "Departure Tax" but not vital ! Liverpool is less than an hour on the Train from...

Wow, this is turning into a real education!! I checked with my uncle and yes, I can fly Chicago to Manchester and return from either London or Paris to Chicago. The ticket is free to him and he said he would cover any fees as a "graduation gift to me" (he's a pretty cool dude!), but I don't want to burden him with a heavy departure fee, so maybe Paris would be the way to go. I'd like to leave about Friday, May 9th and return 4 weeks later, June 6th. A few days later and returning a few days...

That's helpful too, Rob. So with your guys advice, I'm thinking of the following plan, which still has holes I need to fill. I actually like the idea of Paris more than Scotland for this trip, plus I worry about the cost of travel to Scotland back so unless I can get a really cheap plane ticket or train ticket to Edinburgh, I think I'll drop that and focus on eastern UK and then on to Paris. So this is where I'm at now: 1) Arrive in Manchester. Maybe ??2 days 2) Travel Liverpool. 3 days 3)...

Since I bought a TomTom with US maps on I've been seeing a new America. I can now get lost on my annual road trip around the US and the places I've found are amazing. I just follow my curiosity. The Ferry travels mostly with Trucks and trailers from the UK and Europe. Fresh produce and manufactured goods. Then its folks on vacation with their car and the occasional caravan. From the UK and Europe. Many prefer their own car when touring Ireland for a few weeks. Full of kids survival kits. Wellington Boots and a beach bucket and spade ! Many travel with tents and trailer tents. And you can continue on from Ireland to Scotland. Travelling on the ferry can be a pleasant day. On board...

The Temperatures for Liverpool rely on the strength of the Gulf Stream which sends warm water up from the Caribbean to the West of the UK. It follows the Jet Stream. It means that we can grow Palm Trees in the West - right up to Scotland ! Without this we would freeze in winter because we're that far North. Near to the Latitude of Alaska. But we don't !

Re: Expect to pay more for travel in 2015
Travelling "out of season" has wonderful rewards. When the kids are in school time and avoiding national holidays are a great bonus. I've used airports in Scotland because they have differing school breaks from England. And saved £££££'s. But now the kids are adults I can still use the lessons I've learned. I don't think the American side of the pond enjoy "Bartering and Haggling" as much as Europeans do.

Edinburgh, Scotland for 2.5 days....help!
Hi- we will be travelling to Scotland the end of September and I am trying to get my itinerary together for Edinburgh. We will only have 2.5 days here and I want to make the most of it. We are staying near the Waverly Train Station so I think we are close to a lot of the major sites. I need one thing Sunday afternoon when we get there before we get ready for dinner. Can anyone help? I was planning Monday and Tuesday being our "pound the pavement" days but not so much that we are overwhelmed.
