Thanks for these pictures, and for opening a new vista. I've usually thought of floating villages as connected to cities such as Bangkok...but the idea that they could exist on their own is fascinating. Is this area unique in that way, or are there others in Vietnam?

I'm glad that you liked the pics Paul. The floating villages there are the only ones quite like it that I recall seeing in Vietnam. Down on the Mekong it is quite usual to see extensions to homes built far out over the water that they pretty much classify as floating! There are a lot of house-boats on the Mekong too but the villages in Ha Long bay are much more substantial in that they are made up of floating platforms upon which several houses can be built together. That's an interesting link, GarryRF, because Sri Lankans tend to be pretty mellow about most things. Still, being disrespectful (or perceived as disrespectful) to Buddha is frowned on and not tolerated by the Sinhalese majority. As many know, it is considered very disrespectful to show too much skin in a Buddhist temple or shrine (no bare shoulders or legs). My daughter was in Vietnam a year ago on her honeymoon DrF. She would visit the local Churches - as these were often pieces of exquisite architecture. On occasions outside Christian Churches she would recognise the tune of a Hymn - and while staying outside - she would sing along ! Yes - I know - a little crazy and religious too ! It's always good to see the art and beauty of emerging nations. Far from the images that we had in our minds if we remember recent history. My Daughter has travelled extensively in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand and tells amazing stories of some of the local food. Which completely deters my wife from venturing into this part of the world. When we were in Bali and Singapore she survived on McDonalds ! Give me Fish Head soup and Chicken Porage any day !

I wished 'd known this on my first adventure to see the Northern Lights in Norway, suffice to say those photos weren't great at all. Fantastic tips to keep in mind when I do venture to see them again.

Having grown up in Canada, I recall some spectacular displays of the Northern Lights, especially when I was young. What always impresses me is how they seem alive. I need to head to Northern Canada sometime in the next few years to see if I can get some photos of the lights. Great piece! Great photos! Thanks for all the advice.

i believe that we should make a copy of our passport and bring some photos (passport size) before departure. It will be really useful in the case we lost our passport. This is my travel experience whilst working as travel consultant in Vietnam.

Ah, remember my note about my childhood! Your 30 years are later, and after the Vietnam War had changed many people's view, not necessarily on the poppies or on remembrance, but on the American Legion and VFW, and their role during the Vietnam era.

I bought a Poppy in September this year from a Vietnam Vet in Easton MD. I commented on his cap with the dates on - and he removed his jacket to show me his T-shirt with his Division and Da Nang and a host of other cities where he fought. Had some amazing stories to tell.
