Re: Al Fahidi Historical District
In this area there's a really cool museum that we visited - the Museum of Illusions. Also, make sure to eat at the Arabian Teahouse 5 minutes walking from this neighborhood! https://valentinasdestinations.com/

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Mar.4th 2014: Dubai Water Taxi
It's a great image, Islandman! I really enjoy photos of people going about their every day lives in different locations about the world, a reminder to me how much more alike we all are than different. This photo is made more interesting by their obviously ethnic diversity -- people who have come to Dubai for a good job and to improve their lot in life. The contrast of the old wooden taxi and modern skyscrapers in the background is great!

Re: February 11, 2019: Souk Madinat Jumeirah
Nice enough - but, in my opinion, a bazaar or souk needs the ramshackle element to be exciting. These places are far too tidy for my liking. They simply cannot match the atmosphere of the old markets in, say, Istanbul, Marrakesh, or Fez. Below is a shot of Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, a huge labyrinth of narrow lanes and passages.

Generally agreed, especially if you're really wanting to buy something. But when the temperatures is over 40C outside, and you're looking for a cool place to escape to, then this is a reasonable option. The canal system did make it more interesting than most malls.

Re: In Egypt: Luxor & Karnak
Thanks for sharing you Egyptian adventures. I'm sure you were looking over you shoulder for any tourist lurking danger. I especially liked the Roman fresco and Amun profiles. You are a true traveler, story teller and photographer of ancient locations that I would probably never visit. You are also a great advisory to ID'ing those WITW Gumbo photos.

Thanks, George, so glad you're enjoying them. I laughed at 2 things you said - I actually forget to remember the possibility of "lurking danger". And if you mean "adversary", every week I forget to look at the WITWs until you've probably already named them. Not much of an adversary.

Like you, we were completely blown away by the temples and monuments along the Nile - to the extent that we booked an identical tour for the following year. The second time round we explored the more distant parts of the sites. We often found ourselves completely on our own.

I was often completely alone, too, possibly for a different reason, the shortage of visitors. I am considering going again next winter, and because independent travel is always a learn-as-we-go experience, I'll do some things differently and mention them later in the story.

Re: Al Fahidi Historical District
this is a beautiful description of Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood. Basically, you can discover what old life was like during the mid-19th century Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood. Located along the Dubai Creek, this district is a key heritage site with much of the original infrastructure preserved and intact. The traditional wind towers constructed from stone, teak, gypsum, palm wood and sandalwood – represent only a small part of Al Fahidi’s history. Each alley, twisting pathway and...
