Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? 7.8
Indeed, a baby something, judging by the careful way it's held. I'm going to guess platypus because of the protuberance which doesn't seem to be a bird beak. If so, presumably in Australia.

Re: Udawalawe National Park, Sri Lanka
Fantastic bird photography Professor and those crocodiles look like they aren't missing any meals lately. If I compute correctly, 1000 rupees is equivalent to $6.43 or 4.66 British pounds. Seems the Sri Lanka currency has weakened quite a bit since 2014, so maybe a good time to get a value vacation there.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, June 4th, 2014: Humming Birds
I enjoy these birds, although like guys speeding by on motorcycles (affectionately called "organ donors" in Germany) they seem to live on the edge. Life in Fast-Forward x12! One year we discovered a hummingbird nest in one of our bushes. Its eggs were amazingly tiny! The entire nest wasn't much bigger than my thumbnail (wish I'd taken photos of it) And PHeymont, we need to get you out of the city more. I know NYC is famous for its big cockroaches, but if you can't tell a bird from an insect,...

Paul, you're beginning to sound like Ben Franklin who wanted the turkey to be the USA's national bird, not the bald eagle. If he'd seen these photos, I'm sure old Ben would have been advocating for the chickens.

Garry -- you sure Henrietta isn't really Henry? That comb and proud tail look rather like a rooster to my eyes. But a rather beautiful bird. Interesting that they're protected in Key West, when there are so many. Thanks for sharing this.

Re: Strahov Monastery, Prague. Where Gumbo Was #57
The dodo bird is sitting in a glass jar in the hallway outside this great library. It's a long hallway, but it's there. I'm thinking with a little recombinant DNA technology, we should be able to pull some cells from that dodo bird and bring it back to life? (Would work if it's in formalin, but not if its in alcohol). But maybe it's best to leave well enough alone.

June 1, 2017: Voted the UK's #1 Favourite Bird.
In a recent UK poll the Robin was voted as the wild bird we most like to see in our English Garden. This little chap stays all year. He gets food and clean water all winter. And in the summer months he keeps my apple tree free from greenfly and bugs that like my apples too. A timid little fellow - but he will attack any other Robin that invades his territory. He has a little family now and they make plenty of welcome noise.
