Re: The Medieval Fortress and Town of Chinon

PortMoresby ·
I love Chinon, thought it the perfect place when I spent a few days there resting up, after a week or so walking from chateau to chateau from Chambord. Uncrowded, an idyllic setting, small yet big enough - in short, it has everything. And residents not touristed out, as places can get, loved to death. Many thanks for the reminder, DrF, as beautiful as I remember.

We had a two-day flying visit to Strasbourg (pre-TGV) a few years ago and loved it...and now you've pushed it way high up the re-visit list! Thanks...

What a beautiful and great destination! I've also not visited it before but it's definitely on my radar. How much time would you recommend for a first time visit?

DrFumblefinger— A few days could be enough in Strasbourg itself, but if you want to tour the vineyards, I'd stay a week in the area. You could stay two nights in Strasbourg and then a night or two in Riquewihr and beyond. And I'd suggest renting a car to go at your own pace. For my next trip, I will plan at least full week in the region because I want to stop at the vineyards and visit more of the museums. And don't forget Chateau Haut Koenigsburg.

Banff National Park: A hike along Lake Louise and the Plain of Six Glaciers

Looks like an amazing place to add to my list of "Must see" places next time I visit Philadelphia PA. Is 1 day enough to see it all or should I stay close by for 2 days ? Thanks for the insight and interesting photos Stephanie.

Hi Gary: Two days should do it. One day isn't quite enough. It's a bit of a sprawling property.

There are few places in France of greater historic importance than Chinon.  You wouldn’t know that by what you see when you drive thru it today as it seems a small sleepy rural town.

Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Oct. 6: Chateau D'If, France's Alcatraz

Paul Heymont ·
The storied Chateau D’If sits on the small island of If, just a short ferry ride from Marseille’s Vieux Port. Built originally (depending on your view) to defend Marseille from invasion or to keep Marseille under the king’s control.
