Re: Lawrence and the Pirates

Paul Heymont ·
Thanks for letting me as close as I'll probably get to the tramp steamer fantasy so many of us grew up with--and which is now, apparently, more civilized than in the fantasies...but still with an edge of danger.

A sad addendum, "our" Lawrence, Peter O'Toole, has died in London at the age of 81. One of my very favorites for all time, the movie and the actor. RIP "Orence".

Re: Beautiful collection of mate cups at the Puerto de Frutos market, El Tigre Argentina. Mate is the national drink of Argentina, a type of tea

PortMoresby ·
Mate' is very high in caffeine and has a lovely smokey flavor. If we look closely at the cups, I believe they are the traditional sort, made from embellished gourds. It's drunk using the "straws". There's a nice version available in the US, 'Morning Thunder' which is combined with black tea, 'Celestial Seasonings' brand. I've even seen mate' available loose at my local natural foods store where they also sell the cups. Fun to see them in situ, DrF.

Re: March 19, 2018: Winter at Caraquet Wharf, New Brunswick

DrFumblefinger ·
Brrrrr. I can feel that North Atlantic wind crossing over all that ice. It's a little hard to tell from the photos but I assume the boats are dry-docked fro the winter? Ice can be a very destructive force when it thaws.

A lot of boats are dry-docked for the winter, but I did see others that were not. The Bay looks more like a field. That's an island out there!

Hi again GarryRF Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed this collection of photos. You are correct that these cars are definitely kept warm and secure in garages all over Thunder Bay during the harsh winter months, which makes it all the more special to see them out and about in the summertime. Just another reason why I love summers in the Great White North, eh.

Re: NYC's Laguardia gets builder for new terminal

Estimated construction costs of $3.6 billion.... Shall we start a pool on what the real costs will end up being? I'd guess double that.
Comment

Re: NYC's Laguardia gets builder for new terminal

Paul Heymont ·
So you're taking the low end of the pool? LOL! Actually, there is a smallish incentive to keep the cost low as possible, because the consortium's $2.5 billion share is meant to be made back out of operating profits once the terminal is open. So, if they run the cost up, it will take them longer to get their money back. On the other hand, my guess at the scenario is that they'll have arranged for most of any overrun to come from PA or state funds...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, December 12, 2013: Aerial Lift Bridge, Duluth, Minnesota

Ottoman ·
Hello again Theodore Sorry for the late response to your question. Personally, I do not think it is worth the time and effort it would take for you to drive to Duluth from Minneapolis for only one day in the winter time. The ride from Minneapolis to Duluth one way on Interstate 35 will take you 2.5 hours, and that's under good driving conditions. In the winter, chances are you will encounter bad weather, and that will definitely add to your driving time. Duluth doesn't shut down in the...

Hi Garry RF and DrFumblefinger. Thanks for you interest on today's pic of the day...the Sleeping Giant. Garry, in Northwestern Ontario (and many other areas of Canada), aboriginal names are used quite commonly. In Thunder Bay, many medical clinics, schools, recreational centers, and so on have an aboriginal name, not to mention the many towns and landmarks in the area that also have aboriginal names. A major piece of Northwestern Ontario's history involves the fur trade (which of course the...
