Re: Want to buy great hand-made lace? Go to Sri Lanka!
Thanks PortMoresby! Gumbo is full of surprises, as we find out each week.... The women working at the lace center were very proud of their skill. Like most Sri Lankans, they're shy when you first meet them and start talking to them, but once the ice is broken you're rewarded with huge smiles and friendly conversation....and a chance to take photos like those you see in this post. The quality of the lace is excellent. I still have a number of pieces I bought here, including a large lace...

Re: La Dolce Vita (Part 6) Murano and Burano
Great memories, rbciao! I'd like to head back to Burano some day, maybe spend 2-3 days there, just kicking back and enjoying the ambiance. We were there in May and it was not at all heavily touristed at that time, though certainly the shops were there to lighten the load of your Euro heavy wallet! Their lace was truly beautiful and my wife just couldn't resist!

Sadly, many public statues do not show us history for " what is was, warts and all," but rather a distorted image of it. Let us be clear: removing a statue is not removing history, it is removing a statement about history. When statues of Saddam Hussein were torn down in Iraq, no one thought they were saying he hadn’t happened, but rather that he shouldn’t have been honored. Re: The Empty Plinth, Regina
When I see a sign from our past I always like to dig deeper into its History. Bearing in mind that History of any conflict is always written by the Victors. If we don't see "Doorways" into our past then we'll look no further. Man's inhumanity to Man is never far away and needs to be kept in our thoughts. Maybe a better option would be to add more Statues of Famous folks of Non-White Descent. Balance the books - Don't burn them.
