Re: November 24, 2016: Enger Tower, Duluth, Minnesota

Hi Garry I never thought of counting the number of steps to the top of Enger Tower for I was too preoccupied with the beautiful scenery; However, thanks to your question I did some internet investigating and discovered that apparently there are 105 steps you must walk to get to the top of Enger Tower (therefore 210 steps in total to get up and down the tower). You really don't need to be an Olympian to get to the top of Enger Tower. Although the number of steps sounds like a lot, and the...

Thanks Ottoman. Thanks for the reassurance. I did have a fear of a thousand tourists behind me - pushing to ascend the stairway - and all at the gallop. The intervals are all well spaced and welcomed. That's why older people carry a camera !

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, July 14, 2015: YanGuan -- a scenic little town to watch Qiantang’s Tidal Bore (钱塘江潮)in China

Roderick Simpson ·
I have heard of the Qiantang Tidal Bore, which is the biggest in the World. The largest in Europe is that on the River Severn in South West England, which is highest near the equinoxes - a website details times and height predictions. I attach some pictures from a few years ago taken near a pub, conveniently located near a good viewing site. The bore is particularly popular with surfers, and I believe the world record for longest wave ride was recorded there.

Excellent piece of History and Interest on Portland. Maine. Perhaps when I've finished my exploration of Smalltown USA I'll add the Big Little Cities to my list. Portland looks so familiar. Is it close to Cabot Cove ?

Re: Portland, Maine: A Big Little City

It's about 30 miles north of Cabot's Cove, which is near Wells, Maine. Which is at one end of the excellent Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, which combines forest and shore habitats and makes a wonderful walk. It was featured in a couple of Pictures of the Day, and was the scene, back in 2013, of Where in the World is TravelGumbo #5

Thanks for a look at some cars we never see, even in museums. That Tatra 26-30 is a very odd duck indeed. In the slideshow, you can see it has 3 axles (double in the rear) so it must have been intended for some serious load--and up front, an engine compartment with no grill (and what looks like a hole for an engine crank!) Seriously...you kinda see why there were only 181 made... Looking forward to the rest!

Thank you Drfumblefinger! I had no clue about this museum and his unique collection. Re: Tampa Bay Automobile Museum: 1) Museum Overview and its Czech collection

The most popular car in the world is believed to be Czech. The plans for the VW Beetle (similar to the T97 above) were found by the invading forces and were presented to Adolf who then laid claim to it being a German design. Czech cars in Europe are very popular and reliable. Skoda Superb

Thanks for the comments, guys. I really was not aware of what beautiful and innovative designs the Czechs had. I can believe that they are reliable. And I can believe that Adolf Hitler was capable of doing almost anything. Stealing the plans for a car seems almost a footnote in his twisted mind.

Actually, there are a number of different stories of how Ferdnand Porsche, under Hitler's direction, designed the Beetle. Another fascinating possibility surfaced last year in the Daily Mail (UK), showing similarities to a project by a German Jewish engineer, Josef Ganz, which Hitler saw at an auto show in 1933. Another aspect: the sort of streamlined design represented in all of these cars was not a unique design at the time; aerodynamic research was starting to have an effect on car design...

Thanks for sharing this story with our audience, Ottoman. I remember Terry Fox well. His run across Canada became an important news story, and the image of him hoping on his good leg before stepping with his prosthesis has always remained with me. He was a remarkable brave young man, and it's sad that he didn't live to see the profound influence that one life can have. A reminder how how cancer can strike anyone. I have a deep personal love for my Hudson Bay Blanket, inherited from my parents, Jim and Barbara McAleer, who bought it in the 1930s when they were newly weds. A dry cleaner tried to steal it from me about 15 years ago. I told him I was going court over it and was told in found the next day! I'm now going to check out the prices on the HBC website. Never have checked. Your fan, NM

Thanks for the comment, Neil. Your story is not a unique one. Many of the HBC blankets get handed down from generation to generation to generation. They are very well made, last forever, and are priced accordingly. I hope you're sitting down when you see the price tag. The display in Banff, like those in most of the town, are very much aimed at Japanese tourists, who like to buy "only the best".

Hi GarryRF I totally agree with your comment. Pink would not have been the color I would have chosen for the Mustang, but it still was a beauty to gaze at and admire. Hi again GarryRF Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed this collection of photos.
