Glad you're traveling again, Mac. Boston is my home town, and October is THE BEST MONTH. Where are you staying in the city? I'd walk the Freedom Trail if you're feeling up to it. Go down to the waterfront. Boston Common and Charles Street are fun places to hang out. Newbury Street is fancy shopping and also has a few fun bistros and coffee shops. The Science Museum is excellent. Plenty of seafood to be had. New England clam chowder is great if you have sweater-weather. Go whale-watching...

It's about 30 miles north of Cabot's Cove, which is near Wells, Maine. Which is at one end of the excellent Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, which combines forest and shore habitats and makes a wonderful walk. It was featured in a couple of Pictures of the Day, and was the scene, back in 2013, of Where in the World is TravelGumbo #5

My only experience of being on the water in NY Harbor was a lesson in perspective and point of view, as this one is. Seen from a clear distance in this way, a great city is an entirely different beast.

Rob, how did I miss this when you posted it? This is possibly the most interesting article I've read for quite a while. I'm pleased they'll be filming it and hope to see it one day. It was part of a package that included safaris in Botswana and travel to Victoria Falls, so I'm not aware of the line item expense but the package was expensive. But it was a remarkable experience, Andredeya. I usually stay in "average" places but once in a while it's nice to pamper yourself. What an odd origin ! Things once embedded seem to take a long time to change, even when it's obvious ! I've always hated drinking straight from a carton anyway. In south India I had a surprise when I heard there was some Indian 'Port' at the store and got a small plastic pouch full of something that bore more resemblance to red wine vinegar.

Actually, it was a Jeopardy question last week. But I did know about SD because I drove across it's southern expanse, getting to see Jewel Caverns, Geronimo, Rushmore, Wall Drugs, The Badlands and The Corn Palace. We didn't get to Pierre because it wasn't on the interstate.

Thanks for sharing these interesting photos and for bringing back memories. I was last in Jewel Cave in 1982, when there was much less known about how extensive a cave network it was. I found the beautiful rock formations to be absolutely fascinating! Travel Luver, I seem to recall that the cave was quite cool, but maybe Still Country Photo can elaborate for us. Also, I vaguely seem to recall that the last formation in your series of photos was called the "Bacon Strip" or something similar?

If memory serves me correctly, the tour was about 90 minutes. Yes, it was quite cool down there but since I had made the trip in late August, it was quite refreshing to be there. At one point, the guide turned out the lights so the guests could see what true darkness really looks like. I have been in the dark before but not like this, it even seemed to mess with your equilibrium and I felt like I wasn't going to stay upright. Yes DrF, that is a "bacon strip" formation. Must be 15 years since I walked most of your journey through Boston. The mix of old and new buildings are fascinating as you walk the city. Many of the older buildings look like they have shared an architects plan with older buildings here in Liverpool UK. I do find it odd that 5 Bostonians were stoning a single Redcoat then you call them unarmed ! A situation that would bring about the same end results today. I enjoyed your Blog. Thanks.

At first, I was thinking the Pacific North West or BC, but the grain elevator points strongly to the Great Lakes. This is supported by Port Moresby's observation of the Ontario company's container. The largest city in the province is Toronto. It has an airfield beside the lake, and my own photograph from the top of the CN Tower taken a few years ago shows hangers just like in the first picture. I therefore vote for Toronto lake shore.

I think I knew this one right from day one, but saved my guess until now. I have to say the TravelGumbo members are great detectives, for I do believe they pretty much solved this puzzle. My guess is: Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which is located on an island just 122 m (400 ft) from shore (downtown Toronto). I believe the ferry route is one of the world's shortest regularly scheduled ferry routes.

Ah, the problems of sample illustration! The stock photo used doesn’t necessarily reflect the situation in all ports. In some, capacity is limited because space that doesn’t block channels is limited; in some others shore facilities are limited. These issues are especially severe for the super-sized 5-and 6-thousand passenger ships.

Personally, I do not think it is worth the time and effort it would take for you to drive to Duluth from Minneapolis for only one day in the winter time. The ride from Minneapolis to Duluth one way on Interstate 35 will take you 2.5 hours, and that's under good driving conditions. In the winter, chances are you will encounter bad weather, and that will definitely add to your driving time. Duluth doesn't shut down in the...

Like the tree pics. I picked up all of my glass floats a bit farther south - on the seaward side of Vancouver Island and on the western shore of the Olympic Peninsula. I think it was always in the summer. Maybe the tides and winds bring different material at different times of the year.

I learned a new word this morning, a good one! I suppose in relation to an interstate, it is indeed, shunpiking. But in the foothills, Hwy 49, the road over the new bridge, is the main artery through the area. All things relative.
