Glad you're traveling again, Mac. Boston is my home town, and October is THE BEST MONTH. Where are you staying in the city? I'd walk the Freedom Trail if you're feeling up to it. Go down to the waterfront. Boston Common and Charles Street are fun places to hang out. Newbury Street is fancy shopping and also has a few fun bistros and coffee shops. The Science Museum is excellent. Plenty of seafood to be had. New England clam chowder is great if you have sweater-weather. Go whale-watching...

PortMoresby is very right DrF, Chesil Beach is a 'shingle' beach is 29 kilometres (18 mi) long, 200 metres (660 ft) wide and 15 metres (50 ft) high - and pretty steep too!! The 'shingle' (large round pebbles) varies from pea-sized at the north-west end (by West Bay) to orange-sized at the south-east end (by Portland). If its sun-sea-sand and safe surfing you're looking for then try Liverpool -in the North West of England. Where the sand is so soft that even Rolls Royce use it to smooth car bodies prior to painting. So you're guaranteed a smooth landing when your board comes ashore !

Some beautiful photos, Ottoman! I'm fond of black sand beaches because you only find them in places with active volcanoes, and I love volcanoes. White sand beaches are generally formed from the breakdown of coral (often by parrotfish, who eat it and clear the fine particles out the other end). This beach isn't that large, but the black sand is striking. And the turtles -- how lovely they are. They look soooo relaxed. Makes me want to take a nap in that warm sand, too!

This was a tough one. The first couple of photos made me think this might be Death Valley or possibly Saddle Road on the Big Island of Hawaii, but the last couple of photos clinched it for me. If you look closely at the rocks the vendor is selling, you can make out images of what appear to be animals, possibly birds. The last photo looks like it shows some carving in the sand. Such a desolate place...my guess would be the Nazca Lines, Peru.

The issue of what we can do about the "world's changing climate" aside, when I look at a massive stone structure like the one in the photo and realize it's sitting essentially on a sand bar (which is what most of Florida is), I'm not surprised that it might actually be slowly settling and sinking. Just like Venice is. Venice has serious problems but these are mostly due to the fact that the entire city is sinking.

50 years ago this area of Liverpool UK was underwater twice a day. Every tide. And storms would cause the land to flood half a mile inland. So this area is now a man made construction. Sand hills cover the solid foundation. Marrem grass has roots that bind the sand together. And it works. Copied off the Netherlands where much of the land is below sea level all year.

Hi Rob. I'll be in Florida this winter with the Snow Birds. Fly to Miami and drive to Key West for a wedding for my son. We already have a Church on our street - but no - he needs the winter sand and sunshine. Maybe next time we'll visit Casa Rob !

In May 1941 - during WWII - Liverpool and its docklands area was bombed for 8 consecutive days. 61,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. When the truckloads of bricks and rubble were removed they were placed between the houses in danger of disappearing and the mighty ocean. Eventually it was possible to reclaim 1000 feet of land back from the water. The tide covered it with sand. And Marren grass was planted along this 2 miles of reclaimed coastline. We enjoy camping here. And we have our own equipment. And we can put it up in 10 minutes too. But going to an area of Europe and getting budget accommodation that's central to exploring Paris - Berlin - Munich - Marseilles - St Tropez - Brussels - the Spanish Costa's etc and all at a budget price. With toilets - showers - hairdryers - on site stores for wine and food - then even the Ladies can't complain. And a car park so you can be off touring the caves and vineyards. Staying in a Budget...

DrF !!!!! The village still has no beggars - no alehouses - no protestants ! Its only a recent decision to have electricity into the village. You can see the village in an hour - its only small. But you can follow the ancient footpaths through the farmland. See the wild fox, geese and birds of prey that live there. Or walk down to the beach. When the tide goes out it leaves 5 miles of sand !

What! and spoil my headline? Seriously, though, not necessarily. The deposit of sand and similar materials is a longer process than is being discussed here, and the new shorelines would be quite different, at least for a long time.
