Hurricane Joaquin crossed the Atlantic and got split in two by the jet stream. France got trapped in the middle of the two. Allowing cold air from Siberia to blow across northern Europe. So the Geese have arrived here on the wind too. 3 Weeks too early. Its what the remnants of Hurricanes do.

Hi GarryRF! I do hope that by the time Hurricane Cristobal reaches the UK it will be nothing more than a weak tropical storm. Here's hoping Cristobal misses you altogether and that the only thing that should "blow you away" on September 2 is my "Cruise Night" blog (ya ya I know...really bad joke, right?). I've never really had Catalina on my list, but it's been in my head for nearly 60 years since the Four Preps song told me that "26 miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is waiting for me..." For any others who remember (or would like to), here's a YouTube link...

Thanks Samantha, great report! I'm from Southern California and I sure miss going to Catalina. My favorite thing has to be watching the flying fish as you take the ferry across. They used to rent motorboats to go around the island yourself, which was cool. Do they still do that?

I only visited Catalina once in the ~25 years I lived in Southern California, but I remember it being exactly as you describe it -- a quieter place that's well away from the glam, glitz and adrenaline-paced speed of the mainland. We also did an island tour and enjoyed that. Mr. Wrigley introduced a herd of bison on to the island which are still very popular.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Loved the song! Hadn't heard it for a LONG time. Not being near the ocean is the hardest thing (besides missing family/friends) about being in CO. But that's what vacations are for, right? Thanks again all.

All the Birds came down from the sky. The temperature dropped from 10c/50f to 5c/41f in a few minutes and a wind started to blow. Cars put their lights on and I was freezing cold outside in my T-Shirt. But I'll remember it well. Two total and one partial eclipse so far !

This is really a blow to those of us who like to find bargain airfares. There were some abuses, but in general the post purchase rule been a good one for consumers and airlines. It's very hard to know a great sale from a mistaken fare. I hope the rule will be enforced in some way in the future.

Most Americans aren't very familiar with the symbolism of the poppy to the Commonwealth countries. They are a sign of remembrance, and appreciation of loss of life for those who fought in the Great War(s). "In Flanders Field the poppies blow, between the crosses row on row,..." When I was young, Remembrance Day (similar to US Veteran's day) in Canada was always characterized by poppies. Everyone wore one, and I'm glad to say that tradition continues. I've never seen a more impressive display...

We southern North Americans are not that unfamiliar with the poppies, although perhaps the younger ones...in my childhood and on, they were annually a tradition carried on by the American Legion. Actually, a little research tells me that the tradition started with them in 1921, and then spread to UK and Commonwealth! You will enjoy it, Jonathan, as did we! Dublin is great and there are many wonderful places in the country but my favorite single region was Dingle and the Dingle peninsula. It's amazingly beautiful and incredibly historic.

Thanks for the comments, Garry. I was in Dingle in October, but we had nice weather. And it was unusually sunny, which was appreciated and made for more interesting photography. Snow is rare in southwestern Ireland because of the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. So while it rarely gets really warm, it rarely gets really cold. One camera? Who travels with only one camera Garry? I thought you've have learned to travel with twins by now!

Well, when you're in Vegas for your anniversary sometime GarryRF, spring for the Bellagio for even just one night and let your beloved wife see the fountain show from that side of the street! I enjoy Vegas in small snippets -- 2-3 days every few years is about perfect. Great place to meet friends, eat well and enjoy a show. Gamble if you want, though I find it too painful to have my wallet stripped that way. I like to go there in the spring and fall so I can head into the surrounding desert...

After we've seen the show from the window of our hotel we have to go and watch it from the street. How do those ducks know when its time for the show ? I was so disappointed not to see one on top of a jet of water. Vegas is one of a few resorts where I can meet my son and his American family in the same hotel ! It's our anniversary in June but I'm being forced to visit Puerto Vallarta by she - "who must be obeyed" !

Dr. Fumblefinger, Nice slideshow with great pics. We were in Venice in 2012 for 6 or 7 days and made an excursion to Burano as a day trip. The first thing we noticed was that tourism has reached the tiny island. There was a new docking station for the vaporetti and all sorts of kiosks selling the usual stuff. Great memories, rbciao! I'd like to head back to Burano some day, maybe spend 2-3 days there, just kicking back and enjoying the ambiance. We were there in May and it was not at all heavily touristed at that time, though certainly the shops were there to lighten the load of your Euro heavy wallet! Their lace was truly beautiful and my wife just couldn't resist!

Absolutely agree, fellow Gumbo-ists, the mobile phone cameras image resolution is quite amazing for such a small device. OK so you can not then blow the picture up greatly without loss of clarity - but how often do you need to do that?
