Sweden: 100 metres of herring on the road

Sweden had its second major herring accident of the year last week, with a truck that swerved to avoid an elk spilling its cargo of herring and herring filets along 100 metres of highway.

Earlier this year, a truck carrying barrels of herring had a spill near the town of Mellenrud; unfortunately for the town the herring was the stinky pickled variety and the cleanup was pungent. Last week’s incident was not as smelly, but it took the driver and emergency service crews over an hour to clear the road for traffic.

And while herring accidents are not that common, wildlife interactions are blamed for over 60,000 road accidents a year, many of them involving large animals such as elk and reindeer.
